• Scheepjes Catona super fine (fingering) weight mercerized cotton yarn

(7/8 oz/68 yds/25g per ball):

3 balls #517 ruby (MC)

2 balls #105 bridal white (CC) • Size E/4/3.5mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle

• Stitch marker

• 2 pieces of 11-inch-square cotton

PATTERN NOTES

Hot Pad consists of 2 squares

(Front and Back) worked separately in rounds, then stitched together with reverse single crochet.

Front is worked from Chart and written instructio­ns in 2 contrastin­g colors with tapestry crochet technique; Back Panel is worked in standard double crochet stitching in a single color. Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

Chain-3 at beginning of round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. In tapestry crochet, carry and work over color not in use on wrong side of Front Panel until next needed. Do not cut or fasten off unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCH

Single crochet join (sc join):

Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated st, yo and pull up a lp, yo and draw through both lps on hook.

FRONT

With MC, ch 4, join (see Pattern

Notes) in 4th ch from hook to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 2, dc in ring. Join in top of beg ch-3. (12 dc, 4 ch-1 sps)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, * change color (see Stitch Guide and Pattern

Notes) to CC, dc in next dc, (dc, change color to MC, dc, ch 2, dc, change color to CC, dc) in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc**, change color to MC, dc in next dc, change color to CC, rep from * around, ending last rep at **. Join in top of beg ch-3. (28 dc, 4 ch-1 sps)

Based on a traditiona­l Scandinavi­an folk art design, this double-thick hot pad crocheted in fingering-weight cotton yarn will add a bright spot to your kitchen!

Rnd 3: Ch 3, dc in next 3 dc, *(dc, change color to MC, dc, ch 2, dc, change color to CC, dc) in next ch-2 sp**, dc in each st across to next ch-2 sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, dc in each rem st. Join in top of beg ch-3. (44 dc, 4 ch-1 sps)

Rnds 4–13: Referring to Chart

(see Pattern Notes), ch 3, dc in each dc around, working (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each ch-2 sp and changing color as indicated. Join in top of beg ch-3. At end of last rnd, fasten off both colors. (204 dc, 4 ch-2 sps at end of last rnd)

BACK

With MC, ch 4, join in 4th ch from hook to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 2, dc

in ring. Join in top of beg ch-3, turn. (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sps)

Rnds 2–13: Ch 3, dc in each dc around, working (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each ch-2 sp. Join in top of beg ch-3, turn. At end of last rnd, fasten off. (204 dc, 4 ch-2 sps at end of last rnd)

FINISHING

Block Front and Back to finished measuremen­t. Hold squares with WS tog and 2 layers of fabric between pieces. Matching sts and working through both thicknesse­s, sc join (see Special

Stitch) MC in any st, reverse sc (see Stitch Guide) around, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
