• Plymouth Yarn Encore

Worsted medium

(worsted) weight acrylic/ wool yarn (31/2 oz/200 yds/ 100g per skein):

13 skeins #701 glacier gray • Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle GAUGE 13 dc = 4 inches; 8 rows = 4 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Chain-3 at beginning of row or round counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. On popcorn rows worked on wrong side, turn popcorn stitches inside out to show on the right side.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCH

Popcorn (pc): 4 dc in indicated st, draw up a lp, remove hook, insert hook in first dc of 4-dc group, pick up dropped lp and draw through st on hook, pull tight.

AFGHAN POPCORN BLOCK

Row 1 (RS): Ch 31, dc in 4th ch from hook (3 sk chs count as first

dc), [ pc (see Special Stitch) in next ch, dc in each of next 3 dc] 6 times, pc in next ch, dc in each of next 2 chs, turn. (7 pc, 22 dc) Row 2: Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), [dc in next dc, dc in next pc, dc in next dc, pc in next dc] 6 times, dc in next dc, dc in next pc, dc in each of next 2 dc, turn. (6 pc, 23 dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each of next 2 dc, [pc in next dc, dc in next dc, dc in next pc, dc in next dc] 6 times, pc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, turn. (7 pc, 22 dc)

Rows 4–15: [Rep rows 2 and 3] 6 times alternatel­y. At the end of row 15, fasten off.

POST ST BLOCK

Row 1: Following diagram to determine which side of popcorn block to work on, with RS facing, join yarn in corner of popcorn block, ch 3, work 27 dc evenly sp in ends of rows of popcorn block, turn. (28 dc)

Row 2: Ch 3, dc in next st, [sk next st, dc in each of next 2 sts,

bptr (see Stitch Guide) around vertical post of sk dc, dc in next dc] 6 times, dc in each of next 2 dc, turn. (6 bptr, 22 dc)

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in each st across, turn. (28 dc)

Rows 4–15: [Rep rows 2 and 3] 6 times alternatel­y. At the end of row 15, turn to work across long edge of double block.

Ch 1, [work 51 hdc evenly across long side edge of double block, ch 2, work 25 hdc evenly sp across short end of block, ch 2] twice, join in beg hdc. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY

Complete 18 double blocks, following placement diagram to determine which direction each post st block should go. Block each double block to 8 x 16 inches.

Working in back lps only, sew blocks tog following placement diagram and making sure that each corner and seam of each patch is aligned with the ones above and below it.

EDGING

Rnd 1: With RS facing, join yarn in top right corner, ch 2, work

3 dc in each corner and 160 dc across each edge, join in beg dc. (652 dc)

Rnd 2: Sl st in center dc of 3-dc corner, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in corner dc, ch 2, [sk next dc, sc in next dc, ch 2] across edge, rep from * around, join in beg sc. (330 ch-2 sps)

Rnd 3: Ch 2, dc in first sc, *3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, [dc in next sc, dc in next ch-2 sp] across to corner, dc in next sc, rep from * around, join in beg dc. Fasten off.
