MATERIALS

• 4-ply medium (worsted) weight acrylic yarn in assorted colors:

Beg ch and first 2 rows: 32 yds Each 2-row strip: 26 yds Border rnds: 1,181 yds

• Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle

GAUGE

Row 1: 2 shells and 3 sc = 3 inches Rows 1–4 = 2 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Sort and lay out scrap yarns to choose and position colors before stitching begins.

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Chain-5 at beginning of row counts as first double crochet and chain-2 unless otherwise stated.

Chain-3 counts as first double crochet unless otherwise stated. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCH Shell:

(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in specified st.

THROW FIRST HALF

Ch 188.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook. *Sk next 2 chs, shell (see Special Stitch) in next ch, sk next 2 chs, sc in next ch*. Rep from * to * across. (31 shells, 32 sc)

Row 2 (WS): Ch 5 (see Pattern Notes), turn. Sc in ch-2 sp of first shell. *Ch 5, sc in ch-2 sp of next shell*. Rep from * to * across, ending with ch 2, dc in last sc. Fasten off. (1 dc, 32 sc, 2 ch-2 sps, 30 ch-5 sps)

Row 3 (RS): With next color and RS facing, draw up a lp in first dc of row 2. Ch 1, sc in same dc, *shell in next sc, sc in next ch-5 sp*. Rep from * to * across, ending with shell in last sc, sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. Fasten off. (31 shells, 32 sc) Row 4 (WS): Rep row 2.

Rep last 2 rows in colors of choice until there are 18 reps of each 2-row section.

2ND HALF

Row 1 (RS): With RS facing and working in opposite side of foundation ch, draw up a lp in first ch. Ch 1, sc in same ch. Sk next 2 chs, shell in next ch, sk next 2 chs, sc in next ch*. Rep from * to * across. (31 shells, 32 sc)

Work rem rows same as First Half.

Border

Rnd 1: With RS facing and any color, draw up a lp in first dc at bottom right corner. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st. Working up side edge, [shell in next sc, sc in next ch-5 sp] across to top right corner, ending last rep with (sc, ch 2, sc) in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. Working across top edge in ends of rows, *{shell in sc of next row, sk next row, sc in sc of next row**, sk next row} 9 times, ending last rep at * (9 shells made).

Shell in next row (beg ch at mid

point), sc in next row, sk next row. Rep between { } across*,

ending last rep with (sc, ch 2, sc) in 3rd ch of beg ch-5 of next corner (19 shells made between corners). Working down other side, rep between [ ] across to bottom edge, ending last rep with (sc, ch 2, sc) in 3rd ch of beg ch-5. Working in ends of rows across bottom edge, rep from * to *. Join (see

Pattern Notes) in beg sc. (31 shells across each sides, 19 shells across each of top and bottom edges)

Rnd 2: Sl st in next ch-2 sp.

Ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch-2 sp. *Sc in ch-2 sp of next shell. [Shell in next sc, sc in ch-2 sp of next shell]. Rep from * around, working (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner ch-2 sp. Join in top of beg ch-3.

Rnd 3: Sl st in each of next 2 dc and in corner ch-2 sp. (Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same corner ch-2 sp, ch 1. *Sc in ch-2 sp of next shell. [Shell in next sc, sc in ch-2 sp of next shell]. Rep from * around, working (ch 1, 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 1) in each corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.

Rnd 4: Sl st in next 2 dc and in corner ch-3 sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in same corner ch-3 sp. *Ch 2, sl st in next ch-1 sp. [Ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp of next shell, ch 2, sl st in next sc] around to last shell before next corner. Ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch-2 sp of last shell, ch 2, sl st in next ch-1 sp**. Ch 2, (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 4, sc, ch 3, sc) in next corner ch-3 sp. Rep from * around, ending last rep at **. Ch 1, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

Sew down end tails with matching thread to secure, if desired. Block lightly with WS facing.
