MATERIALS

• Lily Sugar ’n Cream medium (worsted) weight cotton yarn

(21/2 oz/120 yds/71g per skein): 1 skein each #01116 blue jeans, #00095 red and #00001 white

• Size G/6/4mm crochet hook or

size needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle

GAUGE

14 dc = 4 inches; 7 rows = 4 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Chain-3 at end of row counts as first double crochet of next row unless otherwise stated.

SPECIAL STITCHES

Crossed double crochet

(crossed dc): Sk next st, dc in next st, working behind last dc made, dc in skipped st.

Picot: Ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook.

DISHCLOTH

With white, ch 25.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off. Do not turn. (24 sc)

Row 2 (RS): Join red in first sc with sl st, ch 1, sc in each sc across. Fasten off. Do not turn. Row 3: Join blue jeans in first sc, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each st across; ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), turn.

Row 4: Dc in each st across; ch 3, turn.

Row 5: Dc in each of next 10 sts, work crossed dc (see Special Stitches), dc in each of next 11 sts; ch 3, turn. (22 dc, 1 crossed dc) Row 6: Dc in each of next 8 sts, work crossed dc 3 times, dc in each of next 9 sts; ch 3, turn. (18 dc, 3 crossed dc) Row 7: Dc in each of next 6 sts, work crossed dc 5 times, dc in each of next 7 sts; ch 3, turn. (14 dc, 5 crossed dc) Rows 8 & 9: Dc in each of next 4 sts, work crossed dc 7 times, dc in each of next 5 sts; ch 3, turn. (10 dc, 7 crossed dc)

Row 10: Rep row 7.

Row 11: Dc in each of next 6 sts, work crossed dc 2 times, dc in next 2 dc, work crossed dc 2 times, dc in each of next 7 sts; ch 3, turn. (16 dc, 4 crossed dc) Rows 12 & 13: Rep row 4. At end of last row, do not turn. Fasten off. Row 14 (RS): Rep row 2.

Row 15 (RS): Join white in first sc, sc in each st across; fasten off.

EDGING

Rnd 1: Join red with sl st in first sc of last row, (sc, ch 1, sc) in first sc for corner, sc in each sc across to last sc, *(sc, ch 1, sc) in last st for corner, work

22 sc evenly across ends of rows*, working on opposite side of foundation ch, (sc, ch 1, sc) in first ch for corner, sc in each ch across to last ch, rep between * once, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off. (96 sc)

Rnd 2: Join blue jeans in first sc after a corner sp, ch 1, [hdc in each sc across to corner, sk corner ch sp, work picot (see Spe

cial Stitches)] around; join with sl st in first hdc. Fasten off.

FINISHING

With red, work surface sl sts around the crossed dc in a heart shape as follows: Holding dishcloth flat, with yarn beneath, insert hook through front of dishcloth to underside, yo and draw up a loop of yarn. Insert hook again about 1/4 inch away from the first insertion point, yo, draw up through to front and through loop on hook. Continue around the crossed double crochet st to form a heart shape. This will make what looks like a chain on the surface of the dishcloth. Fasten off. Weave in ends; block.
