Crocheted in worsted-weight cotton, this sweet little sleepy owl makes a nice soft teething toy for Baby.

MATERIALS

• Lily Sugar ’n Cream medium (worsted) weight cotton (21/2 oz/

120 yds/71g per ball):

1 ball each #01 white, #082 jute, #010 yellow, #02 black, #01725 blueberry, #046 rose pink and #01712 hot green • Sizes J/10/6mm and K/101/2/6.5mm crochet hooks or sizes needed to obtain gauge • Tapestry needle

• 4-inch square crinkle plastic

(optional)

• 60mm wooden ring

• Stitch marker

GAUGE

Size J hook: 7 sc = 2 inches; 7 rows or rnds = 2 inches

Size K hook: 6 sc = 2 inches; 6 rnds or rows = 2 inches

PATTERN NOTES

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

Do not join rounds unless otherwise stated.

TEETHER BODY

Rnd 1: With size K hook and white, ch 28, join (see Pattern Notes) in first ch to form a ring, ch 1, sc in each ch around, do not join (see Pattern Notes). (28 sc)

Rnds 2–15: Sc in each sc around, do not join. (28 sc)

Rnd 16: Sc in each of next 28 sc, join in next sc, fasten off. (28 sc)

EYE

Make 2 with rose pink, blueberry or hot green. Rnd 1: With size J hook, ch 3, join in first ch to form a ring, ch 1, work 7 sc in ring, do not join. (7 sc)

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around, do not join. (14 sc)

Rnd 3: [Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc] 7 times, join in next sc, fasten off. (21 sc) Thread tapestry needle with a length of black, working straight stitch (see illustrati­on) and using photo as a guide to work V shape, insert from back in sc of rnd 3 through to front and through center of rnd 1, insert from back in sc of rnd 3 on opposite edge to front and back through center of rnd 1, knot to secure, fasten off.

BEAK

Make 1.

Row 1: With size J hook and yellow, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 3 chs, turn. (4 sc)

Rows 2 & 3: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn. At the end of rnd 3, fasten off.

WOOD LOOP

Rnd 1: With size J hook and jute, ch 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 10 chs, 2 sc in last ch, working on opposite side of foundation ch, sc in each of next 10 chs, sc in same ch as first sc of rnd, join in beg sc, fasten off. (24 sc)

FACIAL FEATURES

Sew beak at center of body with 1 corner of beak pointing downward.

Sew eyes centered above beak.

BODY FINISHING

Row 1: With size K hook, join white in top corner, working through both thicknesse­s, ch 1, work 14 sc evenly sp across, fasten off.

Turn body upside down and insert crinkle plastic inside of body.

Row 2: With size K hook, join white in corner, working through both thicknesse­s, ch 1, work

14 sc evenly sp across, fasten off. Place wooden ring in wood loop and with tapestry needle sew top of wood loop through all thicknesse­s on bottom of body 1 inch from bottom on right edge of body.

Cut 2 12-inch lengths each white, jute, blueberry, rose pink, and hot green. Draw 1 group of each color through each top corner on body and knot ends to secure. Trim ends to 21/2 inches long or as desired.
