De Anza resolves to be smoke-free
The De Anza Associated Student Body Senate voted 15-5 on Feb. 1 to endorse a resolution calling for the removal of designated smoking areas on the De Anza College campus. The resolution calls for De Anza to be a 100% smoke-and vape-free campus.
The resolution states that a 2019 survey found that 70% of students have been exposed to secondhand cigarette and vape smoke. It also points out that all UC and CSU campuses are completely smokefree, when compared to 52% of California Community College campuses. The De Anza Academic Senate, representing faculty, voted to support a 100% smoke- and tobaccofree policy in November 2018. The college’s classified staff has to take a similar vote before the policy is adopted on campus.
