At Home readies opening of new San Jose store
SAN JOSE >> At Home, a home decor retailer, is opening a new store in north San Jose at the site of a shuttered Lowe’s Home Improvement site.
The new store — the first in the Bay Area for the merchant — is slated to open later this month, according to At Home.
At Home says it is resuming expansion after a pause during 2020 due to the economic uncertainties unleashed by the coronavirus.
Just ahead of the opening of the new San Jose home decor store, At Home in recent days opened stores in New York state, New Jersey, and Colorado.
“We are thrilled to continue toward our long-term potential of operating 600plus stores in the U.S.,” said Lee Bird, At Home chief executive officer.
At Home’s new San Jose store is at 750 New-hall Drive in the Coleman Landings retail center near the city’s airport and the Earthquakes soccer stadium.
Texas-based At Home subleased the store from Lowes Home Improvement, Santa Clara County property documents show.
The store totals 139,400 square feet in size, according to public documents. The length of the sublease wasn’t immediately disclosed.
At Home had been planning to open the San Jose store for some time, but did not do so while the coronavirus raged on. In January 2020, At Home received a San Jose city permit for wide-ranging improvements and reconstruction work on the inside of the store building.
“We suspended all new store openings and remodeling projects and eliminated all discretionary capital spending,” At Home stated in an April 2020 news release.
Prior to that, the company temporarily closed all of its stores in a quest to save cash at a time when store sales plummeted due to coronavirus-linked customer concerns and business shutdowns.
Now, however, the retailer appears prepared to push ahead with more expansion efforts.
Besides the San Jose store, At Home has store sites in the Central Valley city of Clovis and the Southern California cities of San Diego, Riverside, and Foothill Ranch.
