SUNNYVALE >> A 28-year-old man was arrested Feb. 15 after police said he threatened a security guard with a knife, slashed tires outside of a child care center and displayed aggressive behavior toward officers.

In a press release Feb. 16, the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said it received a call at 8:17 a.m. Feb. 15 from a security guard at a shopping center at 150 E. El Camino Real. The security guard said he had approached the man about an alleged theft when the man removed a knife from his waistband, asking the guard if he was armed.

The guard reported that the suspect approached him with the knife and made slashing motions. The guard fled the scene unharmed, authorities said.

As officers searched for the suspect they were alerted to an incident at the Bright Horizons child care center at East Remington Drive and Sunnyvale-saratoga Road, about two-thirds of a mile south of the shopping center.

There, a man matching the suspect's description was reported to be slashing tires of parked cars in the parking lot. The child care center went into lockdown; four vehicles were later found to be damaged.

Officers located the suspect near Sunnyvale Community Center. Police said he took a fighting stance while officers attempted to detain him and continued to be aggressive while officers attempted to de-escalate the situation.

Officers eventually used a stun gun on the man and placed him under arrest on suspicion of simple assault, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting an officer and vandalism.
