Apple plans to slash hundreds of jobs
Cupertino-based firm will cut 614 positions
SANTA CLARA >> Apple has decided to slash hundreds of jobs in Silicon Valley, an ominous disclosure that suggests the tech industry's staffing cutbacks have yet to run their course in the Bay Area.
The tech titan has revealed plans to chop more than 600 jobs in the South Bay, according to a new official filing with the state Employment Development Department.
Cupertino-based Apple's job cuts mark the iphone maker's first officially disclosed layoffs in the Bay Area since tech companies began to unleash layoffs at an elevated level starting in 2022.
Apple has decided to slash 614 jobs in Santa Clara, the company's WARN notice with the EDD shows.
The tech company described the layoffs as “permanent,” according to the WARN letter Apple sent to the state's labor agency.
The job cuts were scheduled to occur on or about May 27 of this year, the state government filing showed. The EDD reported that it processed the Apple WARN letter April 2.
An estimated 371 of the 614 Apple layoffs in Santa Clara were slated to occur at a company office building at 3689 Kifer Road.
Besides 3689 Kifer Road, Apple also revealed its decision to chop jobs in buildings at 3000-3008 Kifer Road, 2945 and 2975 San Ysidro Way, 1705 Wyatt Drive, 3111 Coronado Drive, 3250 Scott Blvd. and 3260 Scott Blvd., all in Santa Clara.
“No labor organization represents the employees impacted by the position elimination and no contractual bumping rights exist at these facilities,” Apple said in its March 28 WARN letter to the EDD.
Here are the 10 tech companies that have laid off the most workers in the Bay Area in 2022, 2023 and so far in 2024, based on their WARN notices:
• Meta Platforms, 5,195 job cuts in Menlo Park, San Francisco, Burlingame, Sunnyvale and Fremont.
• Google, 2,457 layoffs in Mountain View, Moffett Field, San Bruno, Palo Alto, and San Francisco.
• Cisco Systems, 1,754 staffing reductions in San Jose, San Francisco and Milpitas.
• Broadcom, 1,267 job cuts in Palo Alto due to its purchase of Vmware.
• Salesforce, 1,202 layoffs in San Francisco.
• Intel, 927 staffing reductions in Santa Clara and San Jose.
• Twitter, 900 job cuts in San Jose and San Francisco.
• Paypal, 772 layoffs in San Jose.
• Linkedin, 711 staffing reductions in Sunnyvale, Mountain View and San Francisco.
• Apple, 614 job cuts in Santa Clara.
During the same stretch from 2022 through 2024, tech companies have disclosed plans to jettison well over 38,000 jobs in the Bay Area, according to this news organization's review of WARN filings posted by the state EDD.
