Spirit White make strides in loss

Broken Bow- What a difference a year can make. After being shutout twice by the Sandhills Sharks a season ago, the Spirit White Softball team kept pace in a 5-2 loss on June 23 at Tyke Arnold Field in Broken Bow.

“They really played well,” Head Coach Ryan Coleman said. “You know I look back at last year’s stats and we played them twice and had two hits total out of two games. I think tonight showed how much further we’ve come and we made it a game.”

In the first, Sandhills had runners on first and second when a ground ball was hit to Kennedy Garcia at shortstop. She wasn’t able to make a play and the Sharks took the 1-0 lead early on.

Sandhills was thrown out at second by catcher Joscelyn Coleman for two outs. Spirit White got out of the inning on the following play when Kassidy Cyboron fielded a ground ball at first and touched the bag.

Kate Holcomb’s double in the top of the second put the Spirit in prime position to score their first run. She was driven in by Cyboron and the lead was cut in half at 2-1.

On the mound, Mya Weverka worked her magic and faced only seven batters throughout the next two innings of play.

To start the top of the fourth Garcia had a hard ground ball hit to shortstop. She used her legs to turn what should have been a double to right field by Holcomb, into a triple and the tying run of the game.

With a runner on first in the bottom half of the inning, a wild pitch by Weverka moved the Sharks into scoring position. An error on a ground ball cost the Spirit and Sandhills once again regained the lead.

A hit by a pitch to start the Sharks turn atbat in the sixth led to the fifth and final run.

On the stat sheet, Spirit White outhit Sandhills eight to seven. It was their three errors compared to the Sharks zero that doomed them in the end.

“They won a bunch of games last summer and were third in the state in Class C,” Coleman said. “Being able to hang with them tells me were not far behind.”
