Service Above Self Golf Tournament a huge success

Broken Bow- The first annual Service Above Self Golf Tournament was held Friday, June 26 at the Broken Bow Country Club. It was put on by the Broken Bow area Rotary Club and served as a fundraiser for themselves, Broken Bow Teammates, and Polio Plus.

In total the fundraiser raised $1,340 for the three different organizations.

“So the first year we really just wanted to keep this simple,” Rotary member and tournament organizer Kaci Johnson said. “Something fun that a lot of community members and people outside Broken Bow could participate in. We didn’t want a super competitive event that people felt intimidated to come to. We wanted to keep it fun and light-hearted and really focus on our fundraising efforts.”

The tournament was a nine-hole scramble designed for golfers of any skill level. There were awards given to the top teams, flag prizes for each hole, as well as high and low awards for each hole.

The teams of Nate and Matt Olson and Gordon Goodman and Jason White tied at the top of the leaderboard. In the end, the Olson’s won on a handicap.

Even though the tournament was a success and everybody had a great time, there was a lot of last-minute planning that went into making this fundraiser go off without a hitch. The main reason for this was the uncertainty if they would even be able to hold the tournament up until this last month.

“A month ago we didn’t even know if we could have it,” Rotary president Trish McCarron said. “Basically we brought this together in a month.”

The Rotary plans on holding a similar event in the future, because of all the success they had this year.

“I am very thankful for everybody who turned out,” Rotary District Public Image Chair Deb McCaslin said. “We had three spectacular causes.”

Personally, I had a lot of fun participating in the Service Above Self Golf Tournament.

It was the first time I had ever played golf before and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

I found that driving the ball was a little bit easier than chipping and putting around the green.

I think the best takeaway I got from the tournament is I met some new people in the Broken Bow area.

Overall the tournament fufilled it’s purpose giving people in the community the opportunity to come out and have fun playing golf while also helping out deserving organizations.
