Wind, rain, hail leave their mark
BROKEN BOW - In a year of health and economic challenges, Mother Nature is bringing on challenges of her own. High winds and hail have done their damage, bringing down branches and trees in the area as well as stripping cornfields.
Here are some of the reports to the National Weather Service for Friday, July 10:
3:25 p.m.: 60 mph wind gust, six miles E of Halsey.
3:45 p.m.: 1.75 inch hail, golf ball sized hail and at least 60 mph wind, three miles SE of Dunning.
4:12 p.m.: Public reports of winds at least 70 mph three miles east of Gates.
4:15 p.m.: 0.25 inch hail, east of Gates. About five miles of corn shredded by large hail and damaging wind.
4:40 p.m.: 70 mph wind gust, two miles north of Broken Bow.
5:05 p.m.: 70 mph wind gust four miles ESE of Ansley.
5:07 p.m.: Large trees down in Broken Bow
5:09 p.m.: Flash flood, golf course is flooded, 2 mile WNW of Broken Bow.
5:15 p.m.: 1.75 inch hail, Ansley. Substantial crop damage between Ansley and Mason City.
5:30 p.m.: Fairgrounds underwater, water standing and flowing all over town.
5:30 p.m.: Flood waters reported washing at footings of buildings in Mason City.
5:40 p.m.: Large cottonwood trees bending over, pea size hail, standing water, 10 miles south of Mason City.
5:44 p.m.: 55 to 60 mph winds, Litchfield.
Sunday morning, July 12, there were two reports of quarter to ping pong ball sized hail near Thedford. July 8 there were five reports of a landspout tornado north of Thedford. That same day, 1.75 to 2 inch hail was also reported near Thedford.
