Do more about domestic violence
Saturday, a few miles north of Broken Bow, a woman died in her home apparently as a result of domestic violence.
Sadly, rural females are at increased risk due to isolation, a culture of blaming the victim, sometimes apathetic law enforcement and fear of trusting others.
Courts, law enforcement, the healthcare system, schools, community organizations, employers and all other citizens have a critical stake in the health, safety and wellbeing of women and girls. Everyone must be fearless toward bullies and victimizers.
All of us can commit to increasing awareness and promoting positive change. Womens’ long-established secondary roles of submission, dependence and unquestioned deference toward males can be modified.
We are witnessing positive results from demands to improve the treatment of other oppressed segments of societies across the globe. Raise your sons to respect and honor women. Call out all males who behave otherwise. Know the signs and symptoms of harassment and abuse, and how to contact area resources for assistance. Familiarize yourself with Nebraska laws and advocate for better laws.
Women and girls, I urge you to join together aggressively in this long-term, ongoing effort with determination, courage and stamina which we uniquely possess and which will continue to be met by the usual obstructors. We must do nothing less.
