Callaway gets an upgrade
Work is well under way in Callaway as Great Plains Communications begins to install fiber throughout the Callaway community. As part of the Rural Broadband Initiative created by the Department of Economic Development through the CARES Act funding, communities across Nebraska are getting updated broadband coverage and Callaway was a recipient of those grant funds.
Great Plains Communications and Callaway established a partnership to install fiber to give access to 330 homes and 54 businesses throughout the community. All of the work is scheduled to be done before the end of the year. This project is HUGE and all on a short time table which spells a massive project for the community of Callaway. Today, the maximum speed is 100 Mbps (megabytes per second) which is enough to accommodate a kid doing online homework, and you scrolling Facebook with Hulu streaming in the background.
After this build, not only will that be more affordable, the max speeds increase to 1 Gigabyte per second (1,000 Mpbs) which is enough for two adults to work from home handling huge files and projects (like Amazon/Apple big) while the dog watches Netflix. Even if you’re not at that level, the fiber part of what’s being built will better ensure a seamless performance at whatever speed someone pays for.
High-speed internet is no longer just an accessory – in today’s day and age, including COVID-19 circumstances, internet is now a necessary part of infrastructure. This infrastructure allows us to leverage the new tools and systems that we use to learn, do business and connect with other people. The jump that Callaway is making changes the complexion of the community from one that “does well” to one that now has incredible capabilities to host a major project in recruitment of remote jobs and workforce all the way to hosting a data center if the conditions were right.
