Custer County Chief

From Mona’s desk Trying this again

- BY MONA WEATHERLY Managing Editor

Last week, Alex, Christi and I all fell short in guessing the outcome of the Nebraska-Northwestern game. We all thought the Huskers would prevail. No such luck. Nebraska fell 13-21 and we all wait another week for the Big Red to take another shoot.

Hope springs eternal and both Alex and Christi again predict a Husker victory. Alex says 28-21 over Penn State and Christi says 17-10 in NU’s favor.

What do I say? I think it’s time the Huskers win, too, though I see they are the supposed underdog going into the game. I’ll try again and say 21-18, Huskers over the Nittany Lions. So far, the sun has come up even when my guesses are way off base.

I want to give a shout-out to all our local poll-workers and county employees who worked hard during election week. Thankfully things went smoothly and there seemed to be no blips here locally.

Here’s another shout to our veterans. Thank you for your service. May the United States of America always strive to live up to the high ideals the country was founded on.

It’s the tale of many seasons lately with record breaking temps feeling like summer, cold and snow feeling like winter and some pleasant days actually feeling like fall. Back on standard time, sunset comes pretty doggone early. No matter. Settling down next to the fire on a cold winter night with cat on one side and hubby on the other is just the ticket!

As we know, COVID numbers are on the rise, not only in Custer County but across the state. As you plan your activities, especially going into the holidays, take a moment to think about the people you will be around at a gathering, and then think about the people you will be around after the gathering, and act prudently. The governor and others are saying this is not the time to let down our guard; our defenses must be up. As the governor said during his Monday press conference, “Yes, you can get COVID even from someone you know.” COVID can be transmitted, even at family gatherings. Let’s not panic yet let’s take the proper precautions.

As we think about the holidays, thoughts turn towards gift-giving. I never thought face masks would be the fashion statement they are, but they would make perfect stock stuffers. Bottles of hand sanitizer would fit under the tree nicely, don’t you think? Hey, maybe Santa can bring that ever elusive package of sanitizing wipes, or maybe an extra package of bathroom tissue?

Times are serious, but let’s smile and soldier on and cheer for a Husker victory, too!
