Shopping won’t cost a thing at the Free Garage Sale

- BY MONA WEATHERLY

Do you have some items around the house that are in great condition yet you no longer need, or perhaps you never even used? Pack them up and take them to the “Free Garage Sale” at the Berean Bible Church on Thursday, Nov. 19. Then on Nov. 20 and 21, come back and see if there is anything you need. And it’s all free.

“It’s Share and Care,” said Judy Schweitzer, one of the organizers. “Everyone can come and get what they need. First you bring it, then you take it.”

It could be the opportunity to find something you’ve been looking for or to find that perfect Christmas gift. Schweitzer said there will be items for everyone, from children to parents and grandparents.

Items that have already been donated include blankets, stuffed animals and toys, clothes and novelty items. Items should be in good condition, new or gently used and clean. “Items that have been taken good care of,” Schweitzer said. “Clothes should be folded neatly.” She said furniture should not be donated, however, she knows there will be a vintage student desk available.

The idea for the event came up at Bible Study but Schweitzer doesn’t take credit for it. “Give that to Judy Linville. She said, ‘We need to do this,’” explained Schweitzer.

Attendees are asked to practice social distancing and to wear a mask. People with questions about donating items or needing to arrange a pick up of items can call 308-870-7340, 308-750-0686 or 308-872-5720. Drop off hours on Nov. 19 are 10 a.m. to 5:50 p.m. Shopping hours on Friday, Nov. 20 are 1-5 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. See the ad on page A8 for more information!

While prepping for the Free Garage Sale, Judy Schweitzer was moved to verse. At right are two stanzas, one written from the point of view of a young mother, the second from the point of view of a grandmother.

A young mother thinks as she pauses and sits down Do you think, Father, we could, we should do a care and share all around town?

We will go through our closets with favor and joy Pretty dresses, ribbons and even a toy

We will share our shoes their little feet will not fit in Maybe hubby could make a shoe bin

By Golly, this Grandma feels led

Maybe I can even make brownies or bread

Or maybe I’ll make cookies instead

I know I can share a dress or two with someone down the street

I know maybe I can find a blouse and that would be a treat
