Peterson looks to lead by example for the Bobcats

BROKEN BOW - Last season South Loup’s wrestling team was only able to get one wrestler to state in Logan Peterson at 113 pounds. He represented the school very well and was able to walk away with his first state medal with a sixth-place finish.

“I have been doing this since I was about five years old, so I have been in the sport a long time,” Peterson said. “After all that work, I finally was able to get it. It was just awesome to finally be able to do it.”

When asked about his good performance throughout the 20192020 campaign, Peterson wouldn’t take all the credit. He believes it was his coaches and teammates that got him to where he got.

Last year, I know I did my part for the team,” Peterson said. “We all worked really hard and they helped me. I made it to state, because of them.”

On the mat, Peterson believes there are two skills that separate him from most of the opponents he faces. It’s his quickness, which is essential at the smaller weight classes, and his strength.

“I believe I have a little more speed than everybody else and a little more strength than most wrestlers at my weight class.”

It was that speed and strength that helped him advance through the state tournament a season ago after losing in the second round. After that defeat, he had to win two matches to get to the medal round. He used his strength and speed to outlast Jacob Fox of Axtell 6-4 to advance.

Peterson’s main goal for himself this year is to not finish with double-digit losses on the season. A goal he narrowly missed a season ago with a record of 36-15. He also wants to try and place higher at state than he did last season.

“I hope to not get into double digits in terms of losses this year,” Peterson

said. “I barely missed that goal last season. I also want to place higher at state this season.”

In order for this to happen, Peterson stated that he needs to be able to fin

ish out his takedowns and get up on the bottom better this season.

In terms of a team goal, he knows that South Loup has the potential and talent to get more than just

him to state. He wants to see the Bobcats enjoy themselves this year and hopefully, at district time a bunch of them can qualify for state with him.

As of now, Peterson

has no plans of wrestling after high school, unless something changes. He is planning on staying close to home and helping his father run their family farm.
