Broken Bow Football Wells first season a success at BB

- Heather Wright

The 2020 season was full of a lot of “What If ’s” for the Broken Bow football team. Specifically, in regard to two very close losses at Ogallala and Gothenburg. Ultimately those two one-possession defeats were the difference in the Indians finishing 4-5 rather than 6-3.

“Like I told the kids, I couldn’t be prouder of them,” head coach Carli Wells said. “We had a rough start and lost two really close games that we could have won against

Ogallala and Gothenburg. We make a play here or there and we might be sitting at 6-3.”

It was not all bad for the Indians though as they recovered from an 0-4 at the beginning of the season to go 4-1 down the stretch in Carli Wells first season at the helm.

It seemed as if this team made a turning point during a hardfought home victory over O’Neill. The Indians trailed late in regulation, but never gave up and ultimately were able to pull out an overtime win.

Another big victory on the year was their second to last win of the season on the road at Cozad. The Haymakers went into the game rated in Class C1 and Broken Bow was able to shut their high-powered offense down to get the victory.

The great turnaround was in large part due to a great senior class for the Indians. It included Blake Denson, Frazier Kaelin, Skeeter Campbell, Morgan Van Houten, Lathan Duda, and Dylon Baum.

After winning only one game a season ago, there is no doubt this year’s team did a good job of laying the foundations to make this program successful in the future.

“I just think our kids stuck with the process and believed in what we were doing, and I am super proud of their effort and what they kept doing,” Carli Wells said.
