Broken Bow Cross Country
2020 was another good year of competition for the Broken Bow XC team. The boys qualified as a team for the Class C State Meet and MaKinley Tobey narrowly missed out on placing at a state as a freshman.
According to Head Coach Jason Daffer, this has been a very determined group since the school was let out in March due to COVID-19. With no track season, many of the cross country runners for the Indians started their training early.
It paid dividends for the boys, who placed in the top two at nearly half
of the meets they competed in this year. One of those meets was the Southwest Conference Meet at Gothenburg, where the boys won for the first time since 1971.
Another accomplishment for the Indians came from Daine Wardyn at the Ravenna Invite on Sept. 17. He set the meet record with a time of 17:43.5.
Ultimately the boy’s team didn’t finish as good as they wanted at the state meet, but they return a good amount of their team next season. This includes all three of their state qualifiers Wardyn, Noah Osmond
and Trey Hurlburt.
The sky is the limit with this crew,” Daffer said. “We return five of six runners from this year and with the right preparation again, I like our chances to be even more competitive next season.”
On the girl’s side, the team was not able to get to state. They did, however, keep improving throughout the year, and freshman Tobey was able to get to state.
It’s great to see the strides the cross country team at Broken Bow have made this season and over the last several years.
