Sandhills-Thedford Cross Country Young group improves in 2020
In the 2020 season, Sandhills-Thedford had one of the younger teams in the area with three freshman and one junior. The Knights were able to keep bettering themselves throughout the year as they keep building for future success.
“What a great season,” head coach Jane Haake said. “Out XC team might be small, but we are mighty. The four varsity runners, three freshmen, one junior, and a junior high runner had a streak of personal best runs in three meets in a row.”
This year was a fairly warm year for training in Western Nebraska. More than any other year the team had to be very self-discipline, due to the fact that team practices were limited due to COVID-19 this summer.
“The team conquered tough workouts and a fairly hot season for training,” Jane Haake said. “The team lived up to our motto and let each race take care of itself. At the final race of the season two runners ran personal best races again.”
At districts, the team was able to put their best foot forward. They came up just short of having their first ever state qualifier when Dale Haake finished 19th in the girl’s race in 23:19.94.
With everybody coming back next season, the team looks to be in a good position for a better year. If both teams would be able to pick up one runner, S-T could have a team on both the boys’ and girls’ side. A very big accomplishment for a school the size of S-T.
“The team will all be back next year, and I look forward to coaching them,” Jane Haake said. “The kids on this team cared about each other and they pushed each other to work through tough workouts and meets.”
