Bobcats make fourth straight District Final
The 2020 South Loup volleyball team finished with a record of 22-8 and a 3-1 in district C2-11 in Desiree Guthrie’s first year at the helm. It started rocky as the Bobcats went 2-4 to begin the year, but eventually, they turned things around with a nine-game win streak.
One of the biggest achievements for South Loup during this win streak was winning the Seven Valleys tournament once again. They played so well that they swept an eventual state tournament team in Mullen in the championship match.
“I have seen this team at their top and at their bottom,” Guthrie said.
“Our Seven Valleys tournament was fantastic this year. They showed up even though we weren’t allowed to have spectators and I feel that made them play even harder.”
The Bobcats did so well throughout the year that they were picked to host the C2-11 subdistrict at Callaway and were the top seed. They swept both Sutherland and High Line to get to the district final match for the fourth straight year.
Even though South Loup eventually came up short against Howells-Dodge in their bid for a first state tournament appearance as a co-op it does not take away from the strides, they made this year. Specifically, in helping the younger less experienced players develop on the court.
“The team we brought today was a completely different team from day one,” Guthrie said. “They grew so much not only in their ability physically but also their mental state. The improvements they made make me so excited for next year.” The Bobcats lose four starters off this year’s squad in Jadeyn Bubak, Calyn Laible, Bailey Schwarz, and Laney Badgley. All four players played a key in the success of this year’s squad as starters.
