Custer County Chief

Giving, light & football, of course

It’s that time of year, time for giving.

It’s been a hard year for many organizations that rely on fund raisers to survive and help others.

Fund raisers couldn’t be held in person so some organizations have resorted to online auctions. Many churches and communities have made the decision to not hold holiday dinners and with church attendance down, no doubt plate collection is down, too. The Salvation Army is looking for bell ringers in a time when many people may not feel like venturing out to shop.

We are often reminded to shop local. I encourage us also to give local. If you have something to spare this time of year, think about the organizations that do so much for us right here in Custer County and central Nebraska. When you give locally, you have the added assurance of knowing where your money is going, right here, helping friends and neighbors.

What will your Christmas look like this year? We are encouraged to celebrate with household members only. That means a quieter, smaller celebration. Will that be such a bad thing? Perhaps it’s in the quiet and the calm that the light of Christmas shines the brightest.

If one thinks about it, Mary and Joseph were subject to some pretty extreme social distancing. We may have this serene image of them in our mids of quietly approaching the stable, but can you imagine the thoughts going through their minds, the frustration, the anger. Who among us would think spending a night in a barn would be a good idea, especially with a baby on the way? Yet the Bible tells us they did what they had to do in a very difficult time and we have Christmas to celebrate because of it.

We will get through this socially distanced Christmas season by knowing there is a light at the end of this very long, frustrating COVID-19 tunnel. For the next couple weeks, let’s let that light be the Christmas star!

Saturday was a good day. Big Red was victorious! Nebraska won over Purdue, 37-27. I’m not real good at analyzing sports but the commentators I listened to said the Huskers were hitting on all three fronts, offense, defense and special teams.

So who gets the win here at the Chief? Alex said Nebraska 21 - 17; Christi said Huskers 17-10; and I said Huskers 30-28. I may just have to give it to myself !

This week Nebraska hosts the Golden Gophers of Minnesota. The last line I looked at said Huskers by 9.

Christi thinks it will be a high scoring event, especially for Big Red, saying Nebraska 41, Minnesota 17. Alex predicts a Husker victory 28-14.

I’m going in the middle, Huskers 35, Gophers 18.

Folks, stay safe. Celebrate quietly this year so we can raise the roof next year with all our loved ones around us!
