Broken Bow Athletes honored with Awards at Banquet

- BY ALEX ELLER Sports/Editorial Writer

BROKEN BOW - Like most things throughout 2020, the Broken Bow Fall Awards Banquet did not happen as usual this year. Instead of the annual event being open to the public, this year the awards ceremony was done privately and individually by the Indian football, volleyball, girls golf, and cross country teams.

For the Broken Bow football team, there were a total of 26 athletes that lettered this season. They were freshman Max Denson, sophomores Nathan Reynolds, Raylon Rynearson, Zack Gaffney, Tyson Neeley, and Layton Lindner, juniors Kaden McKeen, Jorge Florres, Quad Gates, Keifer Anderson, Sawyer Bumgarner, Tyler Thomas, Austin Harvey, Cyrus Wells, Keegan Baxter, Qwentin Coble, and Carston Fox, seniors Blake Denson, Frazier Kaelin, Morgan Van Houten, Wyatt Woodward, Schylar Campbell, Dylon Baum, Caleb Moninger, and Lathan Duda.

The next award that was given out to the football team was the Bow Power Football Award. According to Head Coach Carlie Wells, this was the most important award given out because lifting and football go hand and hand. To receive the award you had to lift 32 days this summer.

For the freshman class Brycen Woodward, Eli Coble, Max Denson, Dakota Baum, Gavin Wright, Tyler Nozicka, Tallan Harrold, Evan Cyboron, and Brice Chaplin all qualified.

The freshman lifter of the year was a tight race but ultimately went to Max Denson. He benched 255 pounds, squared 275, hang cleaned 185, and had a power index of 4.11.

Reynolds, Amarion McFarland, Gaffney, Neeley, Linder, Connor Wells and

Hagan Campbell earned the Bow Power Football Award for the sophomores.

Winning the lifter of the year for the sophomores was Connor Wells. He ended the summer benching 235 pounds, squatting 300, hang cleaning 215 and had a power index of 4.66.

Earning the Bow Power Award for the junior class was McKeen, Gates, Nick Shada, Anderson, Bumgarner, Thomas, Harvey, Cyrus Wells, Baxter, and Coble.

In a close race, Thomas was the lifter of the year. He was able to bench 315 pounds, squat 455 pounds, and hang clean 185. His total weight of 955 pounds lifted over the summer was the most on the team.

Eight seniors were able to pick up the Bow Power Football Award. They were Blake Denson, Kaelin, Van Houten, Wyatt Woodward, Schylar Campbell, Dylan Baum, Moninger, and Duda.

Blake Denson ended up winning the senior lifter of the year. He broke the school record for quarterback power index with a 4.94.

The team lifter of the year was given to senior Skylar Campbell. He benched 250, squatted 340, and hang cleaned 190. He also broke the running back power index record with a 5.57.

Earning Academic AllState Awards for their work on the field and in the classroom were Kaelin and Harvey.

The final award given out by the football team was the Broken Bow Offensive and Defensive MVP. Senior back Kaelin won the Offensive MVP for his work in the backfield and Anderson won it for the defense as one of the leading tacklers on the line.

This season was nothing short of spectacular for the Broken Bow Girls Golf team as they dominated almost everyone in their path to the Class C State Title by 46 strokes.

The 2020 team set the nine-hole school record with a 164 and the 18 hole record with a 346. On top of that, they won 11 of 12 meets.

Letter winners for the golf team included seniors Madison Jackson, Avery Campbell, and Graycee Oeltjen, juniors Emery Custer, and Joscelyn Coleman, sophomores Lainey Palmer, freshman Camryn Johnson, and Taylar Schaaf.

There were four individual awards given out on the night as well. They were the Most Valuable Gofer, JV Golfer of the Year, Most Improved, and the Norm and Jan Custer Spirit Award.

Winning the Most Valuable Golfer was Jackson. This year she became a four-year letter winner and led the Indians to the team title by placing 11th at state.

Earning JV Golfer of the Year was Palmer and Garcia was the Most Improved. The Norm and Jan Custer Spirit Award was given to Joscelyn Coleman.

The Volleyball team also had a good season this year for Broken Bow. They qualified for the state tournament for the second season in a row.

Ten different players received letters for the volleyball team this year. They were seniors Kali Staples, Emma Schall, Kassidy Cyboron, Halle Jacobsen, and Cami Schweitzer, juniors Kailyn and Kya Scott, and Callie White, freshman Emma Tayor, and Halle McCaslin.

The most improved player was the hardest award to give out according to Head Coach Skylar Morris. She usually only gives it to one player but decided three players were deserving this season. They were Jessy Lowe, Taylor, and Schall.

Kailyn and Kya Scott were given the Hustle Award for this season. It goes to the player who is not afraid to get on the floor and hustle after the ball.

In sports it’s not always what you do on the court, but how you cheer on and encourage your teammates as well. This is where the idea came for the Spirit Award. This year Molly Staples and Halle Jacobsen received this honor.

The Hulk Award goes to the volleyball player who made the most effort throughout the year to stronger and add more weight in the weight room. Kailyn and Kya Scott, and Kali Staples ended up winning this.

Kya Scott was the recipient of the final award of the night, which was Team MVP. It was fitting she won this award, because she was a Second Team All-State Selection for Class C1 by the Omaha World-Herald.

Also having a very good season this fall was the Cross Country team. The boys won the Southwest Conference for the first time since 1972 and qualified for state for the second season in a row.

Seven girls and boys earned letters for the Indians during the 2020 campaign. They were McKenna Palmer, Isela Tercero, Ryen Haines, Chelsea Royle, Savannah Peterson, Makinly Tobey, and Anna Lindstrom for the girls, and Daine Wardyn, Noah Osmond, Trey Hurlburt, Casey Faulkenberry, Jake Smallcomb, Broke Oeltjen, and Ethan Wenquist for the boys.

There were three awards given out to both the boys and girls team runners. They were the Runner of the Year, Most Improved, and Hardest Working.

For the boys Wardyn won Runner of the Year honors, Brock Oeltjen was Most Improved, and Casey Faulkenberry was the Hardest Working.

Freshman MaKinley Tobey earned Runner of the Year for the girls. She finished first on her team all season and ended up finish 17th at state.

The Most Improved runner for the team was Chelsea Royle and the Hardest Working Award went Isela Tercero.

Overall, it was a great fall sports season for Broken Bow Public Schools across the board. Congratulations to all the athletes for working so hard to achieve your goals.
