Broken Bow School Board approves superintendent contract, looks to the future
BROKEN BOW - The Broken Bow School Board approved a new contract for current superintendent Darren Tobey at Monday’s meeting. Tobey’s base salary was increased from $170,000 to $172,000. A travel allowance of $600 per month was added. Tobey is also eligible for bonuses bases upon academic improvement and financial performance, names keeping general fund budget expenses at $10.4 million or below. The net effect is a 3.65 increase of salary/
The board also reviewed the recent superintendent evaluation with Tobey receiving marks general in the 3.2 to 3.8 range on a scale of 1-4. The superintendent was evaluated on acres such as collaboration with the community, accountability, teaching and learning, leadership, climate and culture, facilities management, and professional growth.
The board voted to accept the resignation of teacher Greg Meyer. “I would like to thank Gary for all he has done,” board member Gerald Pirnie said. It was noted that Meyer is a well-liked teacher and is in education “for the kids.”
Pirnie was also thanked for his time on the school board. Monday was his last meeting as a school board member. Pirnie choose to not run for re-election this year. Re-elected to the board were Tom Osmond and J.B. Pirnie. Amy Staples will officially join the board in January, having been elected in November.
There was spirited discussion on the requirement of wearing of masks for school and activities. “As a board, we need to be based on facts,” Atkins stated. “I’m frustrated as heck.”
Noting the frustration, Tobey said, “We’re doing what the health district says we have to do.” Pirnie also noted the frustration, adding, “Our goal is to keep kids in school.”
Gov. Ricketts recently relaxed the Directed Health Measures which allows for more attendance at events, however the Nebraska School Activities Association is still requiring schools to limit attendance at school activities.
As they look to the future, the board has named a steering committee to gather information about buildings and facilities. Named to the committee are Darren Tobey, Jim Zlomke, Tom Osmond, Pam Holcomb, Tim Chancelor, Jeff Ellis, and Rusty Kluender:
