CUSTER COUNTY Several Custer County libraries are participating in Custer County Reads, a program designed around the novel “Wildlands” by Rebecca Hodge.

“We’re trying to get as many people as we can to read the same book and to share conversation and events around it,” Megan Svoboda, Director of the Broken Bow Library, said. In addition to Broken Bow Public Library, Finch Memorial Library (Arnold), Nigel Sprouse Memorial Library (Callaway) and the Ansley Township Library are also participating.

Each library has been given copies of the book for patrons to check out. There are also five copies available through Libby, the libraries online checkout program. “People have until May to read it,” Svoboda said.

“Wildland” was selected from about a half dozen books reviewed by a committee. “We thought it was a good book for people who have gotten out of the habit of reading to get back into it,” Svoboda said. “It appeals to a variety of people.”

It is the author’s first book. According to Svoboda, Hodge was very enthusiastic when asked to be a part of Custer County Reads. On May 17, the author will lead a discussion on the book via Zoom. She lives in North Carolina.

Other events that have been scheduled include

• KSDS Dogs, a meeting on how therapy dogs are raised and trained, Feb 16;

• Nebraska Forest Service presentation on forest management and fire prevention, Mar. 29;

• Painting, April 10 (may be a small fee)

• Nebraska Game and Parks program on invasive species and wildlife conservation, April 12

All events are related to the novel. In the story, the main character’s daughter trains dogs. “And there are two dogs in the book,” Svoboda said. The other events tie in with the forest, nature and wildfire.

The events will be a blend of remote and in-person. “All will be available via Zoom. There will be people in the library, seated apart, and people in their homes,” she said. “It’s for everybody’s comfort level.”

Lang Seng, Director of Nigel Sprouse Memorial Library in Callaway, said she was contacted by Svodoba about participating last week. “When Megan called, it sounded like something my patrons would be interested in. There are quite a few who would enjoy being part of something like this.”

Cindy Ahrens, librarian at Finch Memorial Library in Arnold, said several people have already read the book.“They’ve said it’s very good. I’ve heard good comments about it,” she said. On Friday she reported that three of that library’s six copies were checked out.

The author is participating for no charge, Svoboda said. A grant is in the works to pay for some of the program. There may be a small fee for those who participate in the painting event. Visit one of the participating libraries for more information or call to inquire about book availability or for information on one or more of the events.

Custer County Reads is an opportunity to relax and escape the real world for a little and connect with others over a neutral topic. Svoboda said, “We’re hoping to take people’s minds off politics and the pandemic for a while and come together around a great book.”
