Update on vaccines at Callaway

- BY MONA WEATHERLY

CALLAWAY - Early on in the vaccine program against COVID-19, vaccines were being administered at the Callaway District Hospital and Clinics.

“We gave our first shots to hospital staff and local EMS providers on Dec. 23,” Callaway District Hospital Brett Eggleston said. “Following that, we started working through patients age 75 and older on Jan. 15. We are currently giving vaccines to individual age 65 and older.”

Eggleston said once that segment has been concluded they will move into Phase 1B priority group which includes First Responders (fire, police, emergency management), Utilities, Daycare providers and educators.

The Moderna vaccine is being administered at Callaway. As of March 2, 700 doses, both first and second , had been given.

“Our weekly allocation is 100 prime (first) doses,” Eggleston said. “Since vaccine doses are in such short supply, the goal is to administer all of our doses each week and not keep any doses in stock.

No strong reactions to the vaccine have been reported to health care providers in Callaway. The symptoms that have been reported - sore arm, fever, chills, body aches and fatigue - are mild and usually resolve within 24 hours according to Eggleston.

Those interested in receiving the vaccine are encouraged to register on the state site, vaccine. ne.gov. “We are working closely with Loup Basin Public Health Department (LBPHD) to obtain lists of individuals who have registered through the state system,” Eggleston said.
