BROKEN BOW - Recently the Southwest All-Conference boys and girls basketball teams were released to the public, and not to my surprise, Broken Bow was well documented on this list.

For the girls basketball team, both Kya Scott and Kali Staples were picked as first-team members of this group. Kya averaged 13.3 points a game this year and became the career record holder for three’s, while Kali averaged 9.4 points a game and led the team with 133 assists which was good enough for around four a game. She will leave the Broken Bow girls basketball team with the career record for assists.

Earning second-team All-Conference honors was Kailyn Scott. Kailyn was a headache for teams on defense this year and had a team-high 73 steals on the season. To go along with that she averaged 10.2 points per game and averaged 3.8 assists a game.

Besides just earning All-Conference Honors, the senior Staples was also selected to the Grand Island Independent All-Heartland Super Squad. She will be continuing her basketball journey at Doane College next season.

Getting Honorable Mention on the All-Heartland team was Kailyn Scott and senior Kassidy Cyboron.

It’s wasn’t just the players who picked up honors for the Broken Bow girls basketball team, but their coach Kelly Cooksley was honored as Southwest Conference girls Coach of the Year. He just concluded his fourth season as the Head Coach of the Broken Bow girls basketball team, and during that time he has won the Southwest Conference every year and has amassed 78 wins compared to just 23 losses.

The Broken Bow boys basketball definitely had a turnaround this year winning 11 games and going .500, compared to having a losing record and only amassing five wins last year. For this reason, several different athletes were given nods for awards within the conference.

They were junior Keegan Baxter who was a first-team Southwest Conference selection and senior Blake Denson who was a third0team selection.

Baxter led the team in scoring all year and was undoubtedly lethal at times from the threepoint line. This was put on display in games like against Ord at home late in the year, where his team needed all of his 23 points to win the game.

Congrats Broken Bow on a successful showing with the conference awards. I know I have this before in my pieces, but it’s awesome to see your handwork paying off for. Keep up the good work and don’t forget you can always improve and get better.
