Calleroz lone State Qualifier for Rebels in 2020-2021
The Arcadia-Loup City wrestling team battled through some inexperience to begin this year. They continued to improve on what they learned throughout the year, but for most of the team, their seasons ended either in the Sub-District or the District Tournament.
“I will be honest with you we were a little disappointed with Districts,” A-LC Coach Craig Trampe said. “Leading up to it we had wrestled more solid than what we finished out on.”
The only wrestler who ended up making the Class C State Tournament was Tryon Calleroz. It was the second time he was making an appearance at the State Meet.
He went into State with only two losses on the year. Despite his record, medaling in the 152-pound weight class would be tough. In the end, he got to the heartbreak round and lost to Trevor Widener of Bridgeport with a 7-4 decision.
“He was in a bracket where on any given day there could have been ten different guys in the finals and or won it,”
Trampe said. “Unfortunately, we came out just outside of the medals. We lost a tough rematch of a match we won at conference in a tight decision, and then we lost to a kid who ended up being a three-time finalist. His losses were quality losses and he performed well. It can be tough when you’re the only person who qualifies from a town to stay relaxed and that may have gotten to him a little bit.”
Looking ahead to next year, the Rebels will lose their only qualifier in Calleroz but have young wrestlers who got good experience this year. According to Trampe, his team will have to continue to work hard to make next season a success.
“We had some young wrestlers who started to show some good things toward the end of the season and they just kind of ran out of time,” Trampe said. “Overall, I think everybody took a step forward. Some of us have a little further to go than others, so it’s going to take a little more time for them to see the progress that they’re making and see the results of the effort they’re putting in.”
