Indians finish at .500 on year
After finishing last season with five wins, the Broken Bow boys basketball team made huge strides this season by finishing with a .500 record and a mark of 11-11. This was thanks to a winning home record of 7-6, an away record of 4-4 and an 0-1 record in a neutral court contest.
“I am impressed with this entire group in how they handled adversity,” Broken Bow Coach Nate Olson said. “There were some peaks and valleys throughout the season, but anytime we addressed our deficits, they were able to respond. I believe that is a testament to our senior leaders: Dylon Baum, Frazier Kaelin, and Blake Denson. They kept us in check to make sure we were getting better anytime we stepped on the court.”
Some of the key victories for the Indians this season came against a C1 District Finalist in Boone Central 50-37 in the Broken Bow Holiday Tournament and wins over Class B McCook and Lexington on the road.
Broken Bow had a very tough schedule this year and found a way to stay competitive even in their hardest games. This was put on display in a sixpoint loss to Class C1 State Qualifier St. Paul in December, an 11-point loss to C2 District Finalist Amherst, and a 10- point loss to Class B Alliance.
The Indians return leading scorer Keegan Baxter from this year’s team. Also, coming back and putting in some significant playing time are Austin Harvey, Riese Kahnk, and Daine Wardyn.
From this year’s group, Broken Bow loses Dylon Baum, Frazier Kaelin, Blake Denson, and Tyler Wood. They led the team with their hard work and hustle on the court and their leadership and encouragement off the
court.
“I will definitely miss these seniors,” Olson said. “The improvement each of them made individually in four years was tremendous and they were always a team-first oriented group of guys. I cannot say enough how much I enjoyed watching them develop and the time we got to spend together working toward our goals. This group of seniors will definitely be missed by our program as leaders.”
