Mullen Boys Basketball Succesful Season Ends at State
The Mullen boys basketball team put together another solid campaign during the 2020-2021 season. The Broncos ended the year with a 23-4 record and a No. 2 rating in the final rankings put out by the Omaha-World Herald for D2.
The ending of this year was a hard pill to swallow for Mullen who lost in the first round game at state to Falls City Sacred Heart. It was a game the Broncos led until the last ten seconds of regulation.
“This was a special group, a very special group,” Mullen Coach Brad Wright said. “They brought it every day and the ball just didn’t bounce our way this year.”
Despite the early exit at State, Mullen has a lot to be proud of with this season. They were District Champs and MNAC Conference Champs for the second straight year and had no losses to D2 teams until the State Tournament.
The team was led by two seniors Brendon Walker and Byrce McIntosh. They helped get this program back to state last season when they weren’t expected to get there, and kept things rolling into this season.
“It’s hard right now thinking that this was their last game in a Mullen uniform,” Wright said. “They brought so much to this program over the last four years and I’m proud of them and the way they battled throughout their time in the program.”
Despite losing two starters, the group has returning talent in Clayton Moore, Trevor Kuncl, and Jaden Emerson. Both Moore and Kuncle averaged over ten points a game for Mullen and Emerson was close to scoring 9.7 points a game.
Congrats Mullen on an outstanding year. It was truly amazing to get to celebrate your accomplishments and we are looking forward to what the next few seasons have in store for the program.
