GOTHENBURG - The Broken Bow boys golf team began their first season in two years with a dual with Gothenburg on March 25 and then had a meet at North Platte on March 26. The Indians dropped the dual to the Swedes by a narrow margin of 291 to 287 points and finished fourth at the North Platte Invite with 368 points.

At the Dual with Gothenburg, the Indians were led by both Blake Denson and Austin Harvey.

The junior and senior duo both shot a 41 on the day. Good enough for the second-lowest score overall.

Finishing in sixth place was Nathan Reynolds with a score of 49. Two strokes back was Zach Gaffney with a 51.

Carsten Fox had the fourth-lowest score for Broken Bow on the day shooting a 52 for nine holes.

Finishing in a tie with a score of 57 was JR Schaaf and Luke Bell. Hagen Campell was the final Broken Bow golfer and ended up three strokes back with a score of 60.

All in all, it was a good start for a group of golfers who had no varsity experience coming into this season.

“I thought our team performed very well,” Broken Bow Coach Ed Schaff said. “Going into Gothenburg, there was no one on our team that had ever played in a varsity tournament before and only one of our golfers had ever played at Wildhorse. Our kids played well on a tough windy course.”

The next day in North Platte, the Indians were once again led by Denson. He finished 13th overall in the field of around 50 golfers. He scored a 48 on the front nine and an impressive 39 on the back nine. That was the second-lowest score fielded for the back nine in the tournament.

Both Harvey and Reynolds were very steady throughout their eighteen holes. On the front nine, they both shot a 45, and then on the back nine Reynolds bested Harvey by one, shooting a 44.

Overall they both finished in the top 20. Reynolds was 15th with a score of 89 and Harvey was 18th with a tally of 90.

Improving tremendously after a rough start with a 56 on the front nine was Fox. He lowered his score by ten whole strokes on the back nine shooting a 46 and finished his day with a score of 102.

Gaffney who shot a 107 and Schaaf who ended with a 118 rounded out the team score for Broken Bow.

“We played well on Friday in North Platte,” Ed Schaaf said. “It was interesting to see how our kids responded to playing with other teams and individuals. I was pretty happy with the way they competed. It’s the start of the season. I told our kids it’s not where we start, it’s where we end up. Will keep working towards improving our individual golf games.”

Broken Bow had a dual with Holdrege and Cozad at the Cozad Country Club on March 30 and the JV compete at the Sandhills Valley Invite at Augusta Winds on April 1.
