Indians open up track season

- BY ALEX ELLER Sports/Editorial Writer

HASTINGS - After two years in the making, the Broken Bow Track team, once again found themselves competing at the Tiger Invite hosted by Hastings on March 26. In what was the first meet for both the freshman and the sophomores, the Indians faired well finishing third in the boy’s team standings with 76 points and sixth in the girl’s team standings with 59 points.

“I thought the kids competed very well for the first meet of the year,” Broken Bow Coach Ryan Wetovick said. “As coaches, we saw things we could improve on and we will look to fix a few of those as we have a short turnaround time this week with a meet on Tuesday.”

The boy’s team was led by junior Qwentin Coble who had an excellent day in the jumping events. He won the triple jump with a jump 40-07.50 and the long jump with a jump of 21-05.50. Both marks were way out in front of the rest of the competition.

“Qwentin is a great jumper and leader for us,” Wetovick said. “He is not a very vocal kid but he leads by example. He works hard in practice and works hard on the runway so that he can consistently hit the board. We are hoping that as the season goes on we can get him on some longer approaches for some even bigger jumps.”

Brody Ridder also had a gold medal-worthy day in the pole vault event. He took home first place with a vault of 12-00.

For the Broken Bow girls, only one person got first place. That was Kya Scott in the high jump competition. She did this by clearing 5-00.

The Indians also get some notable performances in the distance events which helped the team score on both the boys and side.

MaKinly Tobey was second in the two mile with a time of 13:06.30, and third in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 6:01.50. In the boy’s race, Wardyn was third in a time of 10:59.60 in the two mile and fifth in the mile crossing the line in a time of 5:02.30. Not far off that pace in the mile, was Noah Osmond with a time of 5:03.60.

Broken Bow had a quick turnaround competing at the GICC Invite on March 30. According to Wetovick, he doesn’t mind this because it allows him to move some athletes around again and see what events they are most comfortable with.

“Tuesday at GICC will be a great meet for us, we are going to move some kids around to some different events and try to get them some times to see what they can score points in,” Wetovick said.
