Indians battle through tough competition and weather at home invite

- BY ALEX ELLER Sports/Editorial Writer

BROKEN BOW - The Broken Bow boys and girls track competed at what turned out to be a cool and rainy Broken Bow Invite at Mark Russel Field in Broken Bow on April 9. The Indian boys finished fifth with 51 points and the Broken Bow girls were 10th with 21 points.

“It was a very competitive meet across the board and we saw a lot of season-best despite the cold rainy conditions,” Head Coach Ryan Wetovick said. “We preach to our kids a lot to RMB or run my best. We also talked about how we can’t control the weather but we can control our attitude and effort and I think we saw that for the most part from our kids.”

The Indian’s only first-place finish of the meet came in the boy’s 1,600 meter run by Daine Wardyn. He separated himself from the pack halfway through the race and never looked back, clocking a 5:00.68.

His teammate Noah Osmond was a little over a second behind him in a time of 5:01.75.

“I thought Daine’s performance in the mile was a very gutsy run,” Wetovick said. “He and teammate Noah Osmond pushed each other and ran very well to bring home first and second. The weather especially during that mile wasn’t great but those two stepped up and competed at a high level.”

On the boy’s side, Qwentin Coble continues to be a consistent point scorer for Broken Bow. The junior medaled in the long jump, triple jump, and the 100 meter dash.

In the long jump, Coble jumped 21-06 to finish second, and he went 41-06 in the triple jump to finish third overall. Both those events were won by Quinton Ries of Ord.

In the 100 meter dash finals, Coble shaved over 20 tenths of a second off his preliminary time to finish third in a time of 11.44.

Kya Scott medaled once again in the high jump competition as she pulled out a second-place finish. She tied with Margaret Haarberg of Kearney Catholic with both of them going out at 5-01. Due to previous misses at other heights, Haarberg was awarded first.

In the pole vault competition, Brody Ridder was able to set a personal record for himself going 12-08. He finished in a three-way tie with Jake Burg of Gothenburg and Caden Carlson of Aurora,

but due to prior misses, he finished fourth.

After a tough home invite, Broken Bow had a week to recover for the Minden Invite on April 16.

“We need to continue to grind out some tough workouts,” Wetovick said. “We also are starting to progress well in the field events which is something we knew would take some time but I’m happy with where we are, especially in the field events.”
