Devotion: A good deal!

- BY ROGER SLOAN Lillian Church of Christ

I was checking my emails and noticed the people who sold me my Bible program for the computer have sold to another company. They just knew I would want to know and would want to buy the new software so, to help me get it, they were going out there way to offer me a good deal on it.

At lunch I sat looking at the grocery store flyer in the newspaper and saw a good deal on Diet Mountain Dew (which, it seems we all know, is my drink of choice, of course).

To top it off, my grandson, Caleb, and I were playing a game of ONO. He must of received a good hand because he said, “Oh, Grandpa, good deal!”

I got to thinking I must truly be blessed because I am just surrounded by good deals. At least I’m told so, anyway.

But just what is a good deal? As I understand it in our culture, a good deal is when you get something you need or want for a reasonably low price or a greatly reduced price or, better yet, for free.

Join me for a few seconds and let’s stop thinking for a moment about the here and now. Let’s think ahead to let’s say a hundred years from now, and what would be a good deal to you and I then, because our life on earth will be over and eternity has become a reality.

What would be a good deal then? There are only two places in eternity, Heaven and Hell.

Most of us would like to avoid Hell and that’s why Jesus came. God said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have ever lasting life.”

Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Believing in Him, trusting Him, following Him, now that’s a good deal.
