Devotion: Day of Visitation

- BY TIM PETERSON

One week before Jesus went to the cross, He looked over Jerusalem and wept. In Luke 19:42 He said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace - but now it is hidden from your eyes.”

On that day Jesus walked among the people and most did not see Him. Like today most have heard of Jesus, most know what this week is all about and what Easter Sunday is all about. Jesus weeps over those who have not committed their life to Christ then and today.

On that day when Jesus wept, many of the people of Jerusalem followed their leaders who wanted nothing to do with Jesus. The leaders of the Jews said to Him, “Rebuke your disciples.” In other words, they told the people to stop following Christ.

This is the message a large number of people are telling people in our nation today. Many leaders today are opposed to Jesus. The name that causes the greatest protest today is Jesus.

Jesus says in Luke 19:44, “Because you did not know the time of your visitation.” These words are crushing. There is a harsh reality that Jesus is telling us.

Going all the way back to Genesis 7:16 when Noah and seven other people were going into the Ark, God’s word says, “The Lord shut the door.”

The Ark was closed and no one else could come in. In this Old Testament picture, we can see the horror of the door closed. No man closes the door - the Lord closes the door. Jesus is telling us there will be a time when the door will be closed.

This Resurrection Sunday, I pray we who know Him are willing to stand in the love of Christ and kindness of our Lord, remembering in Titus 2:11, “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people.”

Pray for people to not blindly follow worldly leaders but be open to the message of Jesus’ visitation.
