Tobey to represent Dist. 4 on NSAA Board of Directors
Darren Tobey, Superintendent at Broken Bow Public Schools (BBPS), has been elected to the NSAA Board of Directors. He begins his four year term representing District 4 on Aug. 1.
The board for the NSAA (Nebraska State Activities Association) sets policies for NSAA activities such as sports, One Act, speech, chorus and more. Policies include everything from safety to eligibility.
“Every year there are questions about eligibility requirements and questions on how to classify schools,” Tobey said. “For example, there are discussions on whether or not parochial schools and public schools should be in the same classes.” He added that transgender issues will be a big topic in the near future.
Tobey said the NSAA recently brought a referee to MPCC-Broken Bow to discuss referring high school games, saying, “This was to try to encourage participation in refereeing.”
Tobey sees his election to the board as a good thing for BBPS.
“It gives us another outlet to talk about what we are doing here and doing in District 4,” he explained. “It gives us the ability to showcase what we have here and the good things we are doing.”
It’s also an opportunity for those in different parts of the state to learn more about each other.
“Not every school lines up exactly the same. I hope we can express the view of this part of the state to those in the eastern part of the state and we can come to common agreement on what’s best for all students.”
Tobey is in his fifth year as superintendent for BBPS and in his ninth year as a superintendent overall. As a board member, he will participate in monthly meetings in Lincoln.
According to nsaahome.org, NSAA District 4 has 59 schools with total enrollment of 10,587 students. It encompasses the counties of Keith, Perkins, Chase, McPherson, Logan, Lincoln, Blaine, Loup, Garfield, Wheeler, Custer Dawson, Valley, Greeley, Sherman, Howard, Buffalo and Hall as well as portions of Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, Adams, Hamilton, Merrick and Nance Counties.
