six-player trade. Walker Buehler, Julio Urías and David Price are currently holding down the rest of the starting rotation.

For all their growing star power, the Dodgers’ depth has been tested. Clayton Kershaw (elbow) and Tony Gonsolin (shoulder) are currently on the injured list. Neither is playing catch presently, Manager Dave Roberts said. Recent acquisition Danny Duffy is also on the injured list and isn’t expected to return from his flexor strain until early September.

“We’re kind of holding right now,” Roberts said.

Trevor Bauer, meanwhile, hasn’t thrown a pitch since June after he was placed on administrative leave amid allegations of sexual assault. Each new acquisition makes the return of the Dodgers’ $102 million investment appear less probable.

The Dodgers sent prospect Josiah Gray to the Nationals in the trade for Scherzer, leaving their farm system short on major-league ready starters.

“To lose Clayton and Tony for the time being, to have a guy you can trust in big games is important,” Roberts said. “We’ve always talked about depth and specifically the pitching. We’ve tapped into that depth where we are right now.”

Hamels’ last appearance on a major league mound was last September. After signing a one-year, $18 million free agent contract with the Atlanta Braves, his 2020 season was limited to just one start because of shoulder fatigue. It was the only season Hamels has lost

due to injuries in a career that began in 2006.

Hamels spent 10 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, the team that drafted him in the first round out of Rancho Bernardo High School in 2002. He was the Most Valuable Player of the 2008 World Series, which the Phillies won in five games over the Tampa Bay Rays — a team built by current Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman.

Hamels moved on to the Rangers and the Cubs before signing with the Braves. He went 7-7 with a 3.81 ERA in 27 starts for the Chicago Cubs in 2019, his last full season. He’s 163122 with a 3.43 ERA in 422 career starts, fourth among active pitchers.

With Hamels, Scherzer, Kershaw, Bauer and David Price, the Dodgers currently employ five starters who have combined for eight Cy Young Awards and 26 AllStar Game appearances.

To make room for Hamels on the active roster, the Dodgers designated pitcher Yefry Ramirez for assignment. The righthander threw two scoreless innings in his only major league appearance of the season Sunday.

at home against Minnesota (Aug. 9-10), and in Kansas City (Aug. 8-12).

The Freeway Series will again be a pair of two-game series. The Angels and Dodgers will first play at Dodger Stadium (June 1415) and then at Angel Stadium (July 15-16).

The series at Angel Stadium is the weekend before the All-Star Game, which will be played July 19 at Dodger Stadium. Because the Angels and Dodgers are playing a two-game series in Anaheim, they will have Sunday off.

The 2020 All-Star Game was supposed to be at Dodger Stadium but was canceled due to the pandemic.

The only game on July 21, the start of the second half, has the Dodgers hosting the Giants. The season will end on Oct. 2 at home against the Rockies.
