Mira Costa’s Frias, PV boys conquer hills

Some of the South Bay’s top runners took on the hills at the Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitation­al last Friday and Saturday.

The Palos Verdes boys won the Division 3-4-5 team sweepstake­s (101 points). Luke Stefanou posted the second-best individual time (15:09) and William Kirk was third at 15:23.

Torrance was fifth (140). Vinz De Jesus (15:41) and Daniel Dorantes (15:48) were fourth and sixth, respective­ly. Chadwick’s Joshua Thomas was fifth (15:47).

In the girls Division 3-4-5 team sweepstake­s, PV was fifth (132) and North Torrance was ninth (243).

Mira Costa’s Dalia Frias added another accomplish­ment, winning the Division 1-2 sweepstake­s race with a time of 16:42. That helped Mira Costa win the team meet (68 points) with senior Ella Parsley (17:26) and Anna Chittenden (17:46), finishing third and seventh, respective­ly.

Peninsula’s Aishling Callanan won the Division 1-2 individual sweepstake­s with a time of 17:15.

PV boys water polo earns share of title

PV defeated Mira Costa 8-7 Monday in the Bay League boys water polo final. For the first time, the league had a playoff to determine the final standings. Pool play began last week, with Mira Costa and PV emerging as winners of its pools, leading to the match for first place.

Redondo defeated Santa Monica 13-7 in the thirdplace match.

PV, Mira Costa and Redondo will advance to the CIF Southern Section playoffs. The pairings will be released Saturday.

Here is the timeline for the weekend of pairings: boys water polo (Saturday), 11-man football (Sunday) and 8-man football and girls tennis (Monday).

Football updates

The annual Mayor’s Cup game between rivals Leuzinger and Hawthorne will be played Thursday at Hawthorne.

Also, the start time for the Mira Costa-Redondo game has been moved back to 7:30 p.m.
