Bengals QB Burrow has appendectomy

- News service reports

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has had a successful appendectomy, but there is no timetable for his return to the field, coach Zac Taylor said Wednesday.

Taylor said he didn't expect the star quarterback to fall behind in practice. Burrow had surgery Tuesday and Taylor expected Burrow to be released from the hospital Wednesday, which happened to be the first official day of workouts for the Bengals.

“The good news is he has two years in (the system),” Taylor said. “He knows it. He still has his iPad. He won't be behind the eight ball.”

Backups Brandon Allen and Jake Browning will take the snaps until Burrow's return, likely in a couple of weeks.

The Bengals are coming off their first AFC championship and Super Bowl appearance in 33 seasons. Burrow completed 70.4% of his passes last season for 4,611 yards and 34 touchdowns.

WR JONES NOW A BUC » Julio Jones is the latest high-profile veteran to join forces with Tom Brady in pursuit of a Super Bowl ring.

The Buccaneers signed the seven-time Pro Bowl receiver to a one-year contract, bolstering an already impressive array of playmakers the team has assembled around the soon-to-be 45-year-old quarterback.

Jones, who spent 10 seasons with the Falcons before being traded to Tennessee last year, is coming off the worst statistical season of his career and was released by the Titans in March.

Since entering the NFL as a first-round draft pick of the Falcons in 2011, though, Jones has been one of the NFL's best receivers with 879 catches for 13,330 yards and 61 TDs.

The league's finance committee unanimously recommended the transaction for approval.

The committee will send a report to all clubs at a special league meeting Aug. 9. Twenty-four of the 32 teams are needed to approve the sale of the storied franchise from the Pat Bowlen Trust to Rob Walton; his daughter, Carrie Walton Penner; and her husband, Greg Penner.

SAINTS WR THOMAS RETURNS » Saints top receiver Michael Thomas, back from a serious ankle injury, practiced for the first time in more than a year

In 2019, Thomas turned in one of the greatest seasons by a receiver in NFL history, catching a record 149 passes for 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns. But his stated hopes of an even more impressive encore in 2020 were quickly dashed when opened a teammate rolled up on his leg while run-blocking in the regular-season opener.

Thomas played in eight more games that season — two in the playoffs — but “was playing injured,” and “was clearly on one ankle,” he said.
