Reyes' double lifts Tigers over Padres

Victor Reyes hit a twoout, two-run double in the ninth inning to rally the Detroit Tigers over the visiting San Diego Padres 4-3 on Wednesday.

The Padres led 3-2 going into the ninth and brought on closer Taylor Rogers (15), who gave up a one-run lead in the ninth on Tuesday night in a game San Diego eventually won in the 10th.

This time, Jeimer Canderlari­o led off with a double before Rogers retired the next two batters. Jonathan Schoop followed with a dribbler down the thirdbase line for a single that put runners at the corners.

Reyes then hit a drive over the head of right fielder Nomar Mazara to win it.

The Padres are 14-21 since June 16.

Yu Darvish, who came into the game with a 7-0 record in seven starts against Detroit, allowed two runs in seven innings, striking out 11.

Joe Jimenez (3-1) struck out three of the first four Padres he faced in the seventh, but one reached base when Eric Haase dropped the third strike and threw wildly to first. Jurickson Profar's RBI single then put the Padres ahead 3-2. With the score tied 2-2, Jake McCarthy opened the seventh with an infield hit and Sergio Alcántara hit a single off Logan Webb (94). He went to second when Giants center fielder Austin Slater tried to throw out McCarthy at third.

McCarthy scored on Herrara's bunt and Alcántara came around when Giants first baseman Brandon Belt's throw sailed to the backstop.

Albert Pujols hit a threerun homer and finished with three hits, and visiting St. Louis stopped Toronto's seven-game win streak.

Adam Wainwright pitched seven innings to help St. Louis earn a split of the two-game set while playing without unvaccinat­ed sluggers Paul Goldschmid­t and Nolan Arenado.

Pujols greeted Trevor Richards with his seventh homer of the season and No. 686 of his career.

Wainwright (7-8) allowed one run and five hits.

The homer was the rookie's 18th of the season and came with one out against starter Jon Gray (7-5), who had allowed just one run on four hits to that point.

Rowdy Tellez hit a pair of three-run homers, Corbin Burnes won his fifth straight decision and Milwaukee defeated Minnesota to sweep a two-game home series between Central Division leaders.

Burnes (8-4) struck out 11 in six innings and gave up three runs and five hits.
