Six-run first sends Castillo, Mariners past the Yankees

Luis Castillo pitched fivehit ball into the seventh inning in his Seattle debut, and the Mariners used a fast start to defeat Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees 7-3 on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

Eugenio Suárez, Carlos Santana and Jarred Kelenic homered against Cole (9-4) during Seattle's sixrun first. Jesse Winker connected against Wandy Peralta in the seventh.

“It was just another Luis Castillo start,” said Winker, who played with the pitcher in Cincinnati. “He did great. First start here, I'm sure he was fired up and excited and he did his thing.”

Castillo (5-4) struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander, who was acquired in a trade with the Reds on Friday for four prospects. allowed three runs and walked three.

“It was a little emotional ... but that did not distract me from my routine,” Castillo said through a translator.

Castillo has struck out eight batters in each of his last four starts.

“Thought he was awesome,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “Couldn't be any more excited about what he's going to bring to our ballclub, the stability, taking the ball every fifth day and the confidence and the stuff.”

The Phillies looked to be down to their final three outs when J.T. Realmuto grounded into what was ruled an inning-ending double play with the Braves nursing a 1-0 lead.

But Philadelph­ia challenged the call, and the replay showed Realmuto's foot getting to the bag ahead of the relay throw while Rhys Hoskins trotted home from third.

With the game now tied at 1, Collin McHugh (2-2) fell behind 2-0 in the count before grooving one to Castellano­s, who connected for his ninth homer.

Zack Wheeler (10-5) pitched seven innings for the win, allowing one run on five hits and no walks with seven strikeouts.

Atlanta had won four in a row.

The Mets won for the eighth time in nine games

and opened a 3½-game lead over second-place Atlanta in the NL East. The teams begin a four-day, five-game series today in New York.

Chris Bassitt (8-7) pitched seven shutout innings for New York, which finished with 14 hits.

Washington lost for the fifth time in seven games and dropped to a major league-worst 36-70, including a 9-38 record against the NL East.

ASTROS 6, RED SOX 1 » Trey Mancini homered in his first start for Houston to back a sterling performanc­e by Jose Urquidy in a home victory over Boston.

Mancini, who was traded from Baltimore on Monday, knocked a pitch from Rich Hill (4-5) into the seats in left field for a two-run shot that made it 4-0 with no outs in the second inning.

Urquidy (10-4) allowed two hits with 10 strikeouts in seven shutout innings. He retired the first 13 batters before plunking Alex Verdugo with one out in the fifth. He sat down the next two batters in that inning before Reese McGuire got Boston's first hit on a single to open the sixth.

Jose Altuve tied a career high with four hits.

Hill struggled in his return from the injured list, with the Astros jumping on him for six hits and four runs in three innings. He had been out since July 1 with a sprained left knee. MARLINS 3, REDS 0 » Sandy Alcantara (10-4) threw his major league-leading third complete game and Miami beat visiting Cincinnati.

The All-Star righthande­r allowed six hits, walked one and struck out three for his third career shutout.

Luke Williams had three

hits and stole three bases while Jesús Aguilar homered for the Marlins, who snapped a nine-game home losing skid.

The Reds loaded the bases with two out in the first, but Alcantara retired Donovan Solano on a force at home and Aristides Aquino on a fly to left field.

After Cincinnati forced him to throw 22 pitches in the inning, Alcantara needed 83 the remainder of his outing.

PIRATES 8, BREWERS 7 » Bryan Reynolds homered to lead off the bottom of the ninth, powering Pittsburgh over Milwaukee.

With a 2-0 count, Reynolds sent a fastball from Devin Williams (2-1) 425 feet to right-center field. Reynolds' blast ended a drought of 15 games since he hit three against the Nationals on June 26.

Willy Adames had four RBIs for the Brewers, the final two coming on a twoout single in the eighth that cut into a three-run deficit. Rowdy Tellez then sent an RBI single down the line in right, tying it at 7.

After Ke'Bryan Hayes gave the Pirates a 5-4 lead with an RBI single in the seventh, rookie Oneil Cruz followed by driving a sinker from Brent Suter 434 feet to right-center for a two-run homer.

RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 2 » Hits by newly acquired Jose Siri and David Peralta produced the winning run for Tampa Bay, which beat visiting Toronto.

Siri led off the sixth with a single off Adam Cimber (8-4). He stole second and scored on Peralta's tiebreakin­g single.

Peralta was acquired in a trade with Arizona on Saturday, and Siri came over from Houston in a threeway

trade on Monday.

Teoscar Hernández drove in Toronto's runs with a first-inning double and his 15th homer in the fourth.

TWINS 4, TIGERS 1 » Jorge López got his first save with his new team and newcomer Sandy León drove in two runs, leading Minnesota to the home win over Detroit.

Carlos Correa and Gio Urshela each drove in a run for the AL Central leaders. Joe Ryan (8-4) pitched five innings of one-run ball.

López, an All-Star acquired Tuesday from Baltimore, earned his 20th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

WHITE SOX 4, ROYALS 1 » Lance Lynn threw four-hit ball over six innings, Jose Abreu homered for the second consecutiv­e game and Chicago beat visiting Kansas City.

Lynn (2-4) struck out eight for the third time this season while not walking a batter for the third time in his last four starts. Rookie Bobby Witt Jr. snapped Lynn's shutout bid by hitting a home run with one out in the sixth.

The White Sox (53-51) won for the third time in four games while remaining two games behind the Twins (55-49) and one behind the Guardians (54-50) in the AL Central. The Royals fell for the seventh time in nine games.

Rosario's 450-foot drive to dead center was the longest of the season at Progressiv­e Field.

Shane Bieber (6-6) struck out eight over six innings. He allowed two runs on four hits and no walks.
