Two late goals rally Redondo past Huntington Beach in D1

Jaiden Anderson had the attention of the Redondo girls soccer staff and team entering Wednesday's CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round game.

Anderson, the Huntington Beach junior forward, had scored 29 goals and added 19 assists, as the Oilers visited Redondo.

“We knew (Anderson) was legit. I watched highlights and I knew she was going to be a handful,” Redondo coach Shelly Marsden said. “I do think our preparation was good. Our defensive mid Amanda (Goldstein), she really played the front of her (Anderson) and our center backs (Keira Wagner and Brianna Bogar) played the back. We had a double pretty much everywhere she went.

“In the second half, I also brought in Elisa (Forino) to play center back with Keira and we were able to put Brianna and Amanda as holding mids, so that even later in the second half, we had three (players) on her.”

Through all of defensive shifting and tactical work, the Sea Hawks managed to put the ball in the goal, coming away with a 4-2 win.

The Sea Hawks will visit thirdseeded Villa Park in quarterfinals Tuesday.

Redondo (15-2-2) led 1-0 and 2-1 and each time, Anderson managed to create goals with long throw-ins into the box and each time a Huntington Beach player was able to get a touch and an eventual goal.

The Sea Hawks scored what proved to be the winning goal in the second half as Katie Hessing's cross from the right wing was mishandled by the Huntington Beach goalkeeper and fell into the net.

Later, Wagner, who had already did her night's work on the defensive end, stepped up and buried a free kick from approximately 25 yards out for a 4-2 lead.

kicks in the beginning of the game,” Wagner said. “I heard from the (Huntington Beach's) bench, they had some smack talk and some things to say, so I had to prove them wrong every now and then.

“I think we've always been a strong group, both mentally and physically and I think our ability to kind of bounce back and always keep going is very important and strong quality of our team.”

The night wasn't all positive for the Sea Hawks. Senior Alyssa Whelcel, who scored the game's opening goal, had to leave the game with an ankle injury. She

was taken to the hospital before the game ended. Her status for Tuesday's game is unknown.
