No. 1 Purdue bounces back for triumph over Iowa

Braden Smith scored a career-high 24 points to lead No. 1 Purdue to an 8773 victory over visiting Iowa on Thursday night.

Smith, a freshman guard, shot 8 of 10 — including 4 of 5 from 3-point range. Zach Edey scored 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Edey, who was averaging 22.4 points entering the game, had just four points until the final 81/2 minutes. Edey grabbed a team-high 14 rebounds.

Fletcher Loyer added 17 points for the Boilermake­rs (23-2, 12-2 Big Ten), who rebounded from Saturday's 79-74 loss at Indiana.

Kris Murray scored 24 points and Filip Rebraca had 17 for Iowa (15-9, 7-6).

The Boilermake­rs led by as many as 21 points early in the second half. Purdue was ahead 68-51 when the Hawkeyes went on a 13-2 spurt to close the deficit to 70-64 with 5:39 remaining. NO. 16 GONZAGA 99, SAN FRANCISCO 81 >> Rasir Bolton scored 23 points and had six assists, and Drew Timme added 21 points to lead the Bulldogs to a home win over the Dons.

Gonzaga (20-5, 9-2 West Coast) extended its streak of seasons with at least 20 wins to 26, bouncing back from last weekend's overtime loss at Saint Mary's.

Khalil Shabazz had 25 points for San Francisco (15-12, 4-8), which dropped its third straight game and 26th in a row to Gonzaga.

ARIZONA ST. 69, STANFORD 65 >> DJ Horne scored eight of his 18 points in a closing 14-2 run and the Sun Devils (17-8, 8-6 Pac-12) rallied for a road win over the Cardinal (10-14, 4-9).

UC IRVINE 55, CAL POLY 54 >> DJ Davis had 16 points and five rebounds to help the Anteaters (16-8, 9-3 Big West) hold off the visiting Mustangs (7-18, 1-12), who lost their 12th in a row.

UC RIVERSIDE 72, UC DAVIS 65 >> Zyon Pullin's 16 points and five assists helped the Highlander­s (16-9, 9-4 Big West) win at home over the Aggies.

UC Davis (14-10, 7-5) was led by Elijah Pepper with 32 points and nine rebounds.

Women

NO. 1 SOUTH CAROLINA 83, AUBURN 48 >> Zia Cooke had 15 points and four assists in 20 minutes to lead the visiting Gamecocks past the Tigers for their 30th consecutiv­e victory.

South Carolina (24-0, 11-0 SEC) dominated from the start in a game sandwiched between a pair of top-5 matchups. The Gamecocks were coming off an 8177 win over No. 4 UConn and host No. 3 LSU on Sunday.

Aliyah Boston had 10 points and eight rebounds for South Carolina before exiting with 8:54 left to end a string of eight straight double-doubles.

South Carolina outrebound­ed Auburn 50-26 and had 11 players score.

Sydney Shaw scored 15 points to lead Auburn (1310, 3-8), which played without its top scorer and rebounder Aicha Coulibaly, who sat out with a leg injury.

No. 2 scorer Honesty ScottGrays­on was held to four points on 2-of-11 shooting. NO. 2 INDIANA 87, NO. 5 IOWA 78 >> Grace Berger finished with a season-high 26 points, nine rebounds and six assists and Mackenzie Holmes added 24 points as the host Hoosiers used a late scoring run to pull away from the Hawkeyes.

Indiana (23-1, 12-1 Big Ten) used a 17-7 fourthquar­ter run to earn its 11th consecutiv­e win, this time in front of a record crowd of 13,046.

The Hoosiers now have a 11/2-game lead in the chase for their first regular-season conference crown since the Big Ten's inaugural season of 1982-83.

Caitlin Clark had 35 points, 10 assists and four rebounds to lead the Hawkeyes (19-5, 11-2), who lost for the first time since Jan. 1. NO. 6 STANFORD 84, NO. 17 ARIZONA 60 >> Cameron Brink and Haley Jones each scored 18 points as the visiting Cardinal bounced back from a 72-67 loss at Washington on Sunday.

Stanford (23-3, 11-2 Pac12) won its sixth straight against the Wildcats (18-6, 8-5), a streak that includes the 2021 NCAA title game.

Jones added 12 rebounds and six assists. Brink had eight rebounds while playing 21 minutes.

NO. 8 MARYLAND 79, NORTHWESTE­RN 54 >> Diamond Miller scored 18 points and the visiting Terrapins beat the struggling Wildcats.

Brir McDaniel added 14 points and Maryland (205, 12-3 Big Ten) followed up the program's most lopsided win over a top 10 opponent with another dominant performanc­e.

Coming off a 90-54 romp over then-No. 10 Ohio State on Sunday, Maryland outscored Northweste­rn (816, 1-12) 18-2 while holding the Wildcats without a field goal in the second quarter.
