GAME REPORT

- — Bill Plunkett

THE GAME: Mookie Betts and Jason Heyward hit their first home runs of the spring as the Dodgers beat the Texas Rangers, 4-2, in a game that was shortened to seven innings by rain on Wednesday afternoon in Surprise, Ariz. PITCHING REPORT: Dustin May's fastball had good life in his first start of the spring, hitting 98mph. May struck out three in 12⁄3 innings but also gave up a run on two hits and two walks. The right-hander said he has been working on his time to the plate this spring and started rushing his delivery in the second inning . ... Pitching in a game for the first time since July 2021, right-hander Jimmy Nelson didn't retire any of the three batters he faced in the fifth inning, walking two and giving up a single while topping out at 90mph with his fastball. HITTING REPORT: Facing homer-prone former Dodgers left-hander Andrew Heaney, the Dodgers got leadoff home runs in each of the first two innings (from Betts in the first and Heyward in the second) . ... Will Smith had a double in the third inning and scored a run on James Outman's single. Smith had one of three Dodgers walks in the fifth inning, leading to another run . ... Miguel Vargas drew his third walk of the spring and has a .500 on-base percentage – despite not being cleared to swing during games due to a hairline fracture in his right pinky finger. DEFENSE REPORT: Vargas made a nice play on Robbie Grossman's ground ball to his left in the third inning, sliding on the outfield grass to make the stop then throwing Grossman out from his knees. UP NEXT: Diamondbacks (RHP Ryne Nelson) vs. Dodgers (RHP Michael Grove), today, 12:05p.m., at Camelback Ranch, SportsNet LA, 570AM
