Re “Surf City goes all in to push NIMBY agenda” (March 2):

The people of Huntington Beach made their voices loud and clear: we will not be bullied by the state and its overreach. We will decide our own path and we will fight for our right to do so. A government closest to the people governs best, and local control will rule the day. The state's fight with our city over housing mandates and overriding our local zoning laws is tiring.

California is sitting on hundreds of thousands of acres of undeveloped land but won't allow building, and even when a plot of land opens up, Sacramento regulations make the property completely unaffordable to develop.

Our state government is sounding the alarm about housing shortages and forcing built-out cities like Huntington Beach to make up for decades of bad policies. Huntington Beach is reasserting its local control, and all cities with any self-respect should join us.

— Austin Edsell, Huntington Beach that any money spent for construction must employ expensive union labor (eliminating any non-union contractors) and now, eliminate competitive bidding so that they can select developers and construction labor unions who they want and who can get their hands on the money sooner.

“Never let a crisis go to waste.”

Newsom's new state of emergency after snows

Re “State of emergency for LA, San Bernardino counties due to severe winter storms” (March 1):

So, on Tuesday, Feb. 28, Newsulini declared that the COVID emergency was finally over after three years. On Wednesday, March 1, Newsulini declared a new state of emergency because of the weather damage to homes, businesses and roads.

This must mean that his dictatorial “emergency” powers are reinstated for another indeterminate time after one day of grace in which our “representatives” are responsible rather than our governor.

— Hayden Lening,

Claremont of the helicopter crash, which caused Bryant's death and others'.

A jury agreed that these actions caused pain for all involved.

Why is it that whenever a county employee commits heinous acts, that individual is not held accountable? Have any of these persons been fired as they should have been?

Julie Su

Re “California's Su likely next labor secretary” (March 1):

Ms. Su cracked down on “wage theft”? How about overseeing the greatest “theft” of government funds under her watch at the California EDD to the tune of $40 billion? Allowing jailed criminals and fraudsters in foreign countries to steal from California taxpayers with impunity?

This is our next federal secretary of labor? From our president: “Julie is a tested and experienced leader.” Yes, Mr. President, Julie was “tested” and has the “experience” of having failed miserably at her California labor position.

Another horrific example of how woke box-checking leads to federal disasters like East Palestine, Ohio. Right, Mr. Secretary of Transportation?
