Kings fade in third period, lose for second night in row on road

CALGARY, ALBERTA » Yegor Sharangovi­ch scored the go-ahead goal at 12:09 of the third period as the Calgary Flames earned their fourth straight win, 4-2, over the Kings on Tuesday night.

Andrew Mangiapane, Blake Coleman and Mikael Backlund, into an empty net, also scored for Calgary, while Chris Tanev chipped in a pair of assists. The Flames remain five points back of Nashville for the second wildcard spot in the Western Conference.

Jacob Markstrom had 21 stops and an assist.

Phillip Danault and Kevin Fiala provided the offense for Los Angeles, which has dropped the first two of its three-game Western Canada road trip. The Kings are tied in points with Nashville, but hold down the first wild-card spot having two games in hand.

Making his first start in four games, former Flame Cam Talbot had 33 saves for the Kings.

Sharangovi­ch took a pass from Dryden Hunt, strode over the Los Angeles blue line and ripped a shot inside the goalpost on Talbot's glove side.

Scoreless through the first half of the game, the Kings opened the scoring at 12:08 of the second period when Danault picked the top corner with a slap shot from 40 feet out.

The lead was shortlived, however, with Calgary responding 48 seconds later.

Noah Hanifin's long pass found Mangiapane behind the Kings defense and on the breakaway, he fooled Talbot with a backhand-to-forehand deke that left him with an empty net to slam his 12th goal of the season into.

Continuing the sudden rapid-fire scoring barrage, 56 seconds after that, the Flames took their first lead with Coleman knocking in a Jonathan Huberdeau

rebound at 13:52.

Fiala evened the scored with 1:06 remaining in the middle frame, backhandin­g in a rebound after Markstrom could not control Anze Kopitar's initial shot.

With the Kings playing their second game in as many nights, Calgary started strong. The Flames outshot the Kings 10-3 in the opening 20 minutes, but the game remained scoreless thanks to a Los Angeles penalty kill that bent, but didn't break.

Ivan Barbashev and Mason Morelli scored just over three minutes apart in the second period to build a 2-0 lead for Vegas, which got 28 saves from Adin Hill.

Brenden Dillon, Kyle Connor and Alex Iafallo also scored for Winnipeg, which has won seven of its last eight games.

PREDATORS 4, SENATORS 1 » Roman Josi had two goals and an assist as Nashville extended its winning streak to six games by beating visiting Ottawa. Nashville returned to from a road swing in which it won all five games, the first time in franchise history going 5-for-5 away from home.

AVALANCHE 5, STARS 1 » Andrew Cogliano and Nathan MacKinnon scored 49 seconds apart to help Colorado pull away in the second period, Alexandar Georgiev stopped 33 shots and the Avalanche cruised past visiting Dallas.

HURRICANES 3, WILD 2 » Stefan Noesen scored a goal with his face midway through the third period and Carolina rallied to win at Minnesota. Jordan Staal had a goal and assist and Andrei Svechnikov also scored for the Hurricanes, who won for the first time in three games and improved to 10-1-2 in their last 13 road games.

Samuel Ersson made 21 saves to earn the win, just the second in the last six games for Philadelph­ia. Sam Montembeau­lt made 36 saves to help host Montreal snap its five-game losing streak with a victory over Arizona, which had its losing streak extended to 13 games.
