West Torrance tops Rio Mesa in TNT championship game
The West Torrance softball team won the 13th annual Torrance National Tournament (TNT) with a victory over Rio Mesa in the final Saturday.
The Warriors had consecutive one-run wins over Carson and El Segundo in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, before they defeated Rio Mesa 3-0 in the championship game.
Audrey Lopetegui pitched a shutout for the
Warriors. Raleigh Chung had a pair of hits and drove in two runs and Jessica Hsu had an RBI triple.
Earlier in the day Saturday, West edged El Segundo 2-1. Kamaile Ho drove in both runs. Hsu pitched five innings and Lopetegui picked up the save.
West edged Carson 2-1 Friday as Hsu went the distance in the circle and had two hits at the plate.
Charlotte White tied the score with an RBI single and Tiffany Chang scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
The Warriors outscored their tournament opponents 27-4.
Lopetegui pitched 12 innings, two complete games and had a save with nine strikeouts in the tournament.
West, which earlier this month finished sixth in the Dave Kops Tournament of Champions, is 14-3 and will resume Pioneer League play Friday at Wiseburn Da Vinci.
Also in TNT, El Segundo defeated Kennedy 6-2 in the third-place game.
Torrance defeated Carson 5-0 in the fifth-place game and Redondo defeated Gahr 6-1 in the seventh-place game.
In the Silver Bracket, Palos Verdes won the 11thplace game over South Torrance (11-5) and Mira Costa defeated Santa Monica 8-7 in the 13th-place game.
San Pedro defeated Banning (7-0), Culver City (53) and Piedra Vista (5-2) to win the Bronze Bracket, finishing in 17th place in the tournament.
