Virginia women swimmers win 4th straight national title

-

Virginia won the women's swimming and diving championships late Saturday night in Athens, Ga.

It was the fourth straight title for the topranked Cavaliers, who scored 527.5 points to finish well ahead of the 441 scored by second-place Texas. Florida finished in third place with 364 points, followed by Tennessee (277) and Stanford (250).

On the final night of the competition, Virginia's Gretchen Walsh won her sixth and seventh gold medals at the event, taking first in the 100 free with a NCAA record time of 44.83 and later picking up gold in the 400 free relay.

Virginia won seven individual events and four of five relays. It marked the third consecutive year the Cavaliers won 11 titles at the championship.

Alex Walsh took first place in the 200 breaststroke with a personal-best 2:02.07, the fourth fastest time. It was her third individual title after picking up the gold in the 200 IM and 400 IM races earlier in the week.

Virginia also won its fourth relay of the championship and its third straight NCAA 400 free relay title with a time of 3:05.89, just shy of its record mark of 3:05.84.

Virginia is just the third program to win four consecutive NCAA team titles and the first since 1996.

West Virginia hires Drake's DeVries

West Virginia tapped Drake men's basketball coach Darian DeVries to move the Mountaineers past one of the ugliest years in school history.

DeVries signed a five-year contract, athletic director Wren Baker said. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed. DeVries' hiring came three days after Drake bowed out of the NCAA Tournament with a first-round loss to Washington State.

DeVries, 48, is a two-time Missouri Valley Conference coach of the year. He compiled a 150-55 record in six seasons and took Drake to the NCAA Tournament three times. Drake won at least 25 games in four straight seasons. The Bulldogs tied a school record for wins this season, finishing 28-7.

Drake's 30-1 home record over the past two seasons tied FAU for the best in Division I.

DeVries replaces interim Josh Eilert, who took over after the messy exit of Hall of Fame coach Bob Huggins last summer. With a multitude of player defections, injuries and other distractions, the Mountaineers went 9-23 and finished last in the Big 12. It was a school record for losses and the fewest wins since the 2001-02 team went 8-20 in Gale Catlett's final season.

UCLA women 2nd in Pac-12 meet

UCLA sophomore Selena Harris tied the Pac-12 Championships all-around record at 39.825 to capture the final Pac-12 all-around title and also added individual titles on vault and bars to lead the Bruins to a 197.875 final score and second-place finish in West Valley City, Utah.

Utah won the team title with a 198.000. Cal was third with a 197.325, and Stanford finished fourth with a 197.175.

Gauff, Garcia advance in Miami

Third-ranked Coco Gauff came from behind in the first set to beat Océane Dodin 6-4, 6-0 and advance to the fourth round of the Miami Open for the second time.

Gauff won 10 straight games after Dodin took a 4-2 lead in the opening set, thanks partly to nine double-faults by Dodin at critical moments.

Gauff has just one loss in her past 23 matches in the United States. That defeat came against Maria Sakkari at Indian Wells earlier this month.

Gauff will face No. 27 Caroline Garcia, who defeated Naomi Osaka 7-6 (4), 7-5 on Sunday in a match in which the pair combined for 28 aces.

In other women's matches, top-ranked Iga Swiatek came from behind to edge No.31 Linda Nosková 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4; fifth-ranked Jessica Pegula defeated No. 35 Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 6-4 to reach the round of 16 for the third straight year.

In men's play, last year's Miami Open runner-up and third-ranked Jannik Sinner rallied after dropping the first set to outlast No. 26 Tallon Griekspoor 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 and advance to the fourth round. Tomas Machac beat Andy Murray 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

• Georgia running back Trevor Etienne was arrested early Sunday on drunken driving, reckless driving and other charges, jail records show. The Bulldogs' projected starter was booked into the Athens-Clark County Jail at 4:35 a.m. and released an hour later on bonds totalling about $1,800.
