This week in CU football history: Oct. 12-18

A look back at some of the memorable moments in the University of Colorado’s football history for the week of Oct. 12-18:

1893 — Oct. 14, Colorado 4, Highland School 0

This was the first meeting with Highland, which is now Boulder High School. CU played Highland/state Prep 12 times from 1893-1910, going 11-0-1 and outscoring them 204-5. In the early days of the program, CU played several high school teams going 28-0-1.

1894 — Oct. 13, Colorado 12, Denver Athletic Club 4

At Denver, CU played its second game under new coach Harry Heller, who made several significant changes to the program. This victory was significant because CU had been 0-6 against DAC, while being outscored 194-10.

1928 — Oct. 13, Colorado 21, Northern Colorado 6

Facing an in-state rival, CU rolled to the victory. Bill Smith recorded the first known 100-yard rushing game in CU history, racking up 132 yards and a touchdown.

1947 — Oct. 18, Colorado 9, Brigham Young 7

Holding a late lead in Boulder, BYU tried running out the clock in the final minute, but fumbled at its own 4-yard line. CU’S Paul Briggs recovered the fumble, giving CU one last chance. As the clock ran down, Buffs kicker Johnny Zisch ran out onto the field and quickly booted the 19-yard goal for the victory.

1973 — Oct. 13, No. 18 Colorado 38, Air Force 17

The 18th-ranked

Buffaloes hosted Air Force and cruised to the victory, highlighted by Dave Logan’s 52-yard punt return for touchdown. It would be

Air Force’s last visit to Boulder for 46 years, including 2019.

1976 — Oct. 16, Colorado 20, Oklahoma State 10

In Stillwater, Okla, the Buffs were facing a second consecutive defeat, as they trailed 10-6 in the closing minutes. All hope seemed to be lost when Jeff

Knapple was picked off in the end zone by OSU’S

Jerry Cramer, but Cramer ran the ball out and fumbled at the 1-yard line. Two plays later, Jim Kelleher scored on a 1-yard run, with 43 seconds left. Just 25 seconds later, Frank Patrick picked off an OSU pass and returned for a touchdown to lead the win. The win helped to propel CU to the Big 8 title.

1981 — Oct. 17, Colorado 11, Oklahoma State 10

Another remarkable comeback against the Cowboys, as CU trailed 103 with a minute to play and the ball at its own 4. Quarterback Steve Vogel marched the Buffs down the field land connected with Brad Parker on a 9-yard touchdown pass with six seconds left. Vogel then hit Derek Singleton for a gamewinning two-point conversion pass.

1993 — Oct. 16, No. 20 Colorado 27, No. 9 Oklahoma 10

At Norman, Okla., the Buffs went on the road for an upset of the Sooners. Running back Lamont Warren ran for 182 yards and also threw a touchdown pass. The Buffs gave head coach Bill Mccartney win No. 78, making him the program’s all-time leader, passing the 77 by Fred Folsom. Mccartney would retire a year later with a record of 93-55-5.

1994 — Oct. 15, No. 4 Colorado 45, No. 22 Oklahoma 7

Beating the perennial power Sooners was nothing new for CU. In fact, from 1989-1999, the Buffs went 8-0-1 against them. This was the most dominating performance against the Sooners, though. Defensively, CU held Oklahoma to 40 rushing yards (on 35 carries), with defensive tackle Shannon Clavelle racking up 12 tackles. Rashaan Salaam led the offense, with 161 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

2004 — Oct. 16, Colorado 19, Iowa State 14

At Folsom Field, the Buffs came in on a two-game losing streak, but rode the leg of Mason Crosby to get past the Cyclones. Crosby went 4-for-4 on field goals, including a school-record kick from 60 yards. He also had one from 54 yards. Crosby was named Big 12 special teams player of the week – one of nine weekly conference awards during his career.

2016 — Oct. 15, Colorado 40, Arizona State 16

Taking out years of frustration, the Buffs finally got their first win against the Sun Devils (CU was 0-7 against them before 2016). Phillip Lindsay rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns, while linebackers Jimmie Gilbert and Addison Gillam led a dominating effort by the defense.

2017 — Oct. 14, Colorado 36, Oregon State 33

CU trailed, 33-29, late in the game, but Steven Montez connected with Bryce Bobo on a touchdown pass with 1:34 to play. Oregon State then missed a 52-yard field goal in the closing seconds. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Buffs.
