Boulder County recorded 10 new coronavirus deaths on Tuesday and 89 new cases, as the University of Colorado Boulder showed 14 positive results found during testing on Monday.

The news on new deaths and cases came as the county also reported that in the last week, public health officials have been seeing a decline in the five-day average of new COVID-19 cases.

The deaths occurred between Jan. 12 and 18, bringing Boulder County’s total death toll to 217. Chana Goussetis, Boulder County Public Health spokesperson, said nine out of 10 of the residents reported dead Tuesday had been residents of long-term care facilities. Their ages ranged from the 70s to 100s. She said the delay in recording the deaths was likely due to the long weekend.

The department reported on its online coronavirus dashboard that the number of new cases repor ted Tuesday brings the county’s total case number to 16,479. There have been 441 people hospitalized. As of Tuesday, there were 34 people in the hospital — a decline from the 41 people who were in the hospital as of Monday, public health data shows. The current five-day average for percent positivity is 4.5%.

Boulder County Public Health posted on its Facebook page Tuesday that the decline in the five-day average of new COVID-19 cases is “a good sign that we are probably past any holiday bump in infections.” County data shows that on

Jan. 6, there was a roughly five-day average of 125 new cases among residents, which has dropped to 69.2. To continue the downward trend, public health officials asked for people to continue following public health orders.

The county also showed that there have been 13,308 Boulder County residents who have received a single vaccination dose and 2,159 people who have been fully vaccinated.

The 14 positive cases discovered Monday at CU Boulder were among 125 diagnostic tests and 405 monitoring tests taken that day, the university’s spring coronavirus dashboard showed. Since Jan. 4, there have been 88 positive tests, the dashboard shows. There was no on-campus isolation space in use. Also since Jan. 4, the university has taken 1,145 diagnostic tests and 5,033 monitoring tests.

Boulder Valley School District reported on its online coronavirus dashboard that there are six active cases; 20 inactive cases or cases in which the quarantine period has ended for people who tested positive; and a total of 102 people who are currently quarantined, comprised of 90 students and 12 staff members.

In the St. Vrain Valley School District, there are 22 active cases, divided between 11 students and 11 staff, according to the district’s online dashboard. Throughout the 2020 to 2021 school year, there

have been 454 students infected and 199 staff for a total of 653 cumulative cases, the dashboard showed.

Statewide, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment repor ted on its online dashboard that there have been 377,856 positive and probable cases. Among cases, there have been 5,388 deaths, and of those, there have been 4,502 deaths due to COVID-19. The state showed six variant cases reported. The sixth case occurred in Arapahoe County, according to the Colorado State Joint Information Center. There have also been 20,769 people hospitalized and 2,309,773 people tested out of Colorado’s more than 5.7 million
